About the Item
This is an 18th Century Delft tile mounted in a brass surround with little bun feet, to be used as a stand.
The tile is 18th Century Dutch Delft , Circa 1760 , made of earthenware and all hand painted in a manganese colour. The tile scene is well hand painted, depicting ships coming into what appears to be a granary building set beside a house with a tree and a fence, all between double circles.
The brass surround could well be of an later date , possibly 19th or early 20th Century.
A nice piece, decorative and slightly different and very usable as a small stand for the office, kitchen, coffee table, dressing table, etc.
Notes: On delft tiles
In the second half of the 17th century, the city of delft became the centre of production for high-quality tin glazed earthenware. The earthenware industry disappeared from most Dutch cities, though tile factories managed to survive in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. Tile and plate production continued in the northern province of Friesland, more specifically in the towns of Harlingen and Makkum.
