About the Item
A beautiful and somewhat rare San Ildefonso Pueblo (Santa Fe, New Mexico) blackware (black on black ware) pottery bowl/vase by Juanita Montoya Pena (1900-1987), wife of potter Tony Pena and the youngest sister of Maria Martinez, one of the most famous names in pueblo pottery. This piece features her unique carved technique sought after by collectors.
Juanita and Tony made pottery together into the 1950s but retired to concentrate on religious and pueblo Kiva activities. As a result her work has become quite coveted.
This piece is signed on the base by Juanita (She used different signatures on her pottery such as: "Tony & Juanita", "Juanita Ignacio Pena", "Juanita Pena", "Juanita P", and simply, "Juanita" as with this work).
This work was likely created in the 1930s/1940s.
From a Los Angeles collection of fine Native American and Southwest pottery and artifacts.
A rare and special piece. Would be a great addition to any indigenous pottery/ceramics collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.
