About the Item

A wonderful American folk art pen and watercolor self portrait of John Taylor, Albany, NY, circa 1805-6. Taylor has drawn himself as a fashionable, industrious young man seated at his drawing table, which is, with all its implements and work, as interesting as his clothing, his boots, and the bench on which he is seated. This amazing glimpse into John Taylor’s life includes his detailed and colorful clothing - his collar, cravat, waistcoat, and blue tailcoat with yellow trousers and high leather boots. He is seated on a green painted bench and works at what is, perhaps, a tilted architect’s table, supplied with paper, quill and inkpot, ruler, pencil, and name card, busily occupied in writing out a fair copy of a religious motto that would have then been current, exhorting industry and study and advising mankind not to fritter away life in sloth or indolence - “Man is but dust. Look you and see!”. The portrait on paper is purportedly ink dated on verso 1805 or 6 (not examined out of frame) and housed under glass in a molded blue painted period wooden frame.
