19th Century Society Crazy Quilt in Turquoise, Pink, Yellow, Navy, Green, Red
Located in Barrington, IL
Hand pieced and hand stitched Society American crazy quilt circa the late 1800s. The quilt is a 7 x 7 square block structure. Each block is about 11” x 11” and was created by a different individual. The material, design and the hand embroidery of each block is a representation of a different member of “the society”. The blocks are connected together using herringbone embroidered seams on a truly wonderful cotton backing. The beautiful quilt was found in the New England region, possibly having been made in Pennsylvania in the early 20th century. The pieces have bright colors including turquoise, red, yellow, blue, and many others which results in a vibrant hand crafted piece of late 1800s art that can be used as wall art. Crazy quilts: These quilts were made up of randomly sewn, abstract shapes, and were often embroidered with fancy stitches and motifs. The name "crazy" comes from the irregular shapes and sizes of the patches, which gave the quilt a broken pottery appearance. Crazy quilts were typically made with three layers, but were usually bound and tied to a backing instead of quilted. They were often used as decorative throws instead of bed coverings. Dimensions: 77” x 77” Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1800s Place of Origin: United States Material: Wool, Cotton Condition: Good The Persian Knot, SKU: 2136 American Crazy Quilts, Vintage Crazy Quilts...

Antique, New and Vintage Quilts

Antique, new and vintage quilts can add a welcome decorative dynamic to your space, whether they’re positioned as wall art in your bedroom (just as you might hang a tapestry) or draped over your side tables or the seating in your living room.

Quilts are a quintessential part of American folk art but their roots are international, with quilting dating back to Ancient Egypt. The practice spread to Europe and was especially prominent in the Middle Ages, with one of the oldest surviving examples being the Tristan quilt made in Sicily in the 14th century. They were made as bedcovers and clothing, including as a layer for knights to wear beneath their armor.

For early American colonists, quilts were a crucial source of warmth and comfort. In the 19th century, quilting was a popular activity for women to socialize and commemorate important events, such as weddings or the birth of a child. Distinctive regional variations developed, from the vibrant quilts made in the African-American community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, to Baltimore album quilts with beautifully appliquéd blocks.

If you’re looking to introduce an eye-catching flourish to a bedroom or living room, quilts provide a pop of color and texture to corners that might otherwise be difficult to decorate.
