This collection of three Black Americana baseball figures, circa 1930s-1940s, are attributed to the San Antonio folk artist, Control Valadez. The set of Black memorabilia, sometimes called Black Americana, includes a pitcher, catcher & batter, each having been set and raised onto a custom iron base. They are all quite chippy with losses, nice patina and showing of age, still retaining much of their original paint colors. Likely once outdoor ornaments, we would suggest, due to their delicate condition, that these pieces remain indoors. Though historically, much black memorabilia portrayed racist and offensive ideas, there was also art, such as this collection, which reflects a more positive connotation, commemorating athletic achievements within the black community. African Big Bongo Peoples Stone Female Figure

Africa, Bongo Peoples, stone female commemorative figure from Southern Sudan. A fine specimen in naturally weathered condition; hand carved from a porous orange-black stone, 20th century. Similar funerary stone sculptures in various sizes were likely crafted over many centuries.
Original patina from appropriate age.

Dimensions: 30 inches high and 9.5 inches wide and 8 inches deep mounted on a custom iron base.
Provenance: Old Brussels, Belgium collection acquired in 1998.
History:
The Bongo are an ethnic group living in South Sudan, mostly in the Tonj District. They speak the Bongo language, one of the Bongo-Baka languages. Unlike the Dinka and other Nilotic groups, the Bongo are not a cattle herding people and do not use cows for bride price. Subsistence farming is the primary source of food, though money is obtained by working in forestry, building, selling honey, and other various means.

An ingenious and unusual wooden and metal wire rod trivet from the Finnish designer Kaija Aarikka. The Aarikka design house is over 50 years old, started in 1954 by Kaija Aarikka who, as a textile design student, was unable to find suitably attractive buttons for a suit she had created for a final assignment. She decided to carve her own - and was surprised that her five buttons turned out to be the star of the day. That same year she and her husband founded their company, called Aarikka Oy, and opened their first sales outlet in Helsinki. In the ensuing years the company has focused on creating unique decorative and household designs showcasing local Finnish materials - which entails quite a bit of birch wood. The wooden circles are echoed by the circular wire loops at the end of each row of rings. The construction allows it to be slightly flexible but quite sturdy, while the open loops allow air to circulate under the pot. The wires can be rotated. The Aarikka Finland...
