Antique Japanese Stencil-Dyed Han-Juban

About the Item

Antique Japanese Stencil-Dyed Han-Juban Han-juban are worn under kimono. This example, without its original cotton sleeves, displays a unique stencil-dyed pattern with indigo. A very similar op-art design can be found on European bedspreads from the 1930s, as well as on the ‘itneg binakol’ cotton tribal weavings from northern Luzon in the Philippines, of which there are 19th century examples. Whether this pattern was independently designed in Japan or copied from an imported source, it represents the growing fascination with new, and often foreign, designs in Japan during the late Meiji and Taisho periods.
