Elegant Pair of Bronze Torcheres by F. Barbedienne, P. Dubois and A. Falguière
Located in PARIS, FR
MODEL PRESENTED AT THE 1867 PARIS UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION
Listed in the Ferdinand Barbedienne’s catalogue as the “Deux femmes debout” (Two standing ladies)
Signed on each one P. Dubois – F. Barbedienne Fondeur and A. Falguière – F. Barbedienne Fondeur
Rare pair of parcel-gilt and patinated bronze figures, representing two women dressed in Antique style costume with jewels, each upholding a seven lights-arm candelabra. Standing on round bronze bases and black marble socles.
Paul Dubois (1827-1905) entered the Paris Beaux-Arts School in 1858. He exhibited at the 1865 Salon the Chanteur Florentin, illustrating Florentine sculpture, observed after his journey in Italy. This work, cast that time in silvered bronze, was exhibited at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition (now preserved at the Orsay museum). Dubois' success brought him many commissions, both private (Portrait of Duc d'Aumale) and public (Jeanne d'Arc, in Reims). Appointed curator at the Luxembourg museum in 1873, Dubois became also a member of the Institute and finally headmaster at the Beaux-Arts School in 1878.
Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900) studied under Jouffroy at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts, began his career at the Paris Salon in 1857 and won as soon as 1859 the “Prix de Rome”. Falguière became very quickly successful and was several times awarded medals at the Salon, such in 1868 with his marble sculpture Tarcisius the Christian Boy-Martyr, or at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he won the first medal in his category. Thanks to that success, he was immediately commissioned by private collectors as well as by the French State, whom asked him in 1878 to realize the Triomphe de la République, placed in 1881 at the summit of the Paris Arch of Triumph...

Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A very fine pair of mid-Victorian parcel gilt bronze oil lamps, by Hinks, each modelled as a bearded warrior dressed in the style of a Saxon king with a crowned helmet, broadsword and double-headed battle axe, standing in front of a slender scroll support surmounted by a cut glass oil reservoir, all set on a shaped ormolu base encircled with a victor’s wreath of oak leaves, and raised on an octagonal bronze base, converted to electricity, stamped ‘Hinks & Sons Patent’ on the fitting. Very finely chiseled design with Lion's head holding medallions, acanthus leaves, godrons, arabesques and rosaces, with two detached handles,
Resting on onyx bases
Original gilding and silvered patina, oil lamp system
circa 1860
Attributed to Victor Paillard (1805-1886)
In 1828, Victor Paillard joined Jean-François Denière, bronzier and chaser, and stared to learn while attending evening classes with Chenavard and the chiseler Martinot.
In 1835, Paillard founded his own company of art bronzes and furnishings at 3 rue de la Perle. He first made small bronzes items (paperweight, paper clip, etc.) then extended his production to clocks, groups, statuettes, lamps, chandeliers and candelabras around 1836 when he entered the "Réunion des Fabricants".
He exhibited for the first time at the Exhibition of Industrial Products in 1839 where he presented two large candelabras, a clock with the figure of the Virgin with the goldfinch and a small caryatid clock in ground gold, the latter after a Feuchère model. The Jury then awarded him a silver medal just like at the 1844 exhibition. On this occasion, the critics praised Victor Paillard: “Good taste, respect for the work of the master sculptor, perfect execution, make Victor Paillard a remarkable manufacturer and an artist of merit ”. Indeed, Victor Paillard is a true artist as he is the author of a number of models, many of which represent young children and loves which he then performs in bronze. Such was his fame that he was appointed President of the Reunion des Fabricants de Bronze.
At the 1849 Exhibition he won the Gold Medal. For the 1851 Universal Exhibition in London, he directed the casting of the colossal statue of seated Queen Victoria, executed in bronze and zinc after Dantan the Younger. Subsequently, his production took a new turn: he was at the head of two hundred workers and began to produce more than four hundred models. In 1855, he was appointed member of the Jury of the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. His fame then transcended borders as he was called to Belgium, Austria and especially Russia where he worked for Baron Alexander von Stieglitz. He also received several official orders, notably for the decoration of the Foreign Affairs Palace at the Quai d'Orsay: he made the clock, the bronzes for the fireplace and the four chandeliers with chimeras and groups of children at the Salon de l'Horloge. , the large Renaissance style chandelier...
