About the Item

An Impressive Pair of Napoléon III Gilt-Bronze Figural Torcheres by Goelzer and Poumaroux, Paris. Signed to the plinths ‘A. GOELZER & POUMAROUX, PARIS’. These impressive chased and patinated bronze torcheres are each modelled as a child term figure holding aloft a vase decorated with floral garlands, issuing a flambeau shade. The figures are raised on a tapering square section volute supports with trailing foliate decoration and finely cast lion heads. The bases with four scrolling acanthus feet put down on a lobed plinth. French, Circa 1890. Literature 'Éditions du Génie Civil et de la Métallurgie Tour Palerme', 1880, Vol 1; p. 375. Goelzer and Poumaroux Maison Goelzer was founded by Phillipe Goelzer (1816-1881), in Paris in the first half of the nineteenth century and specialised in light fixtures and gas engineering. Goelzer & Poumaroux amongst other important commissions are recorded as supplying the grand chandelier for L'Opéra d'Alger in 1883.

A Pair of Regency Style Gilt and Patinated Bronze Floor Lamps or 'Torchères'
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Pair of Regency Style Gilt and Patinated Bronze Floor Lamps or 'Torchères', After The Models By James Smethurst of New Bond Street. Each with central lidded urn above three fluted branches with tulip-shaped glass shades supported by three pelicans, the stands with rams’ head masks above monopodia supports on paw feet, England, 20th Century. This model of lamp, without pedestal, was invented by the Regency lamp-manufacturer James Smethurst of New Bond Street, whose registered mark of post-1814 has been recorded on period examples. A set of four lamps of identical pattern - although not apparently signed - is in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. These were originally supplied for the Saloon of Devonshire House, London, where they are recorded in Henry Hunt's watercolour of 1817. Two were exhibited in 'Country House Lighting...

Pair of Empire Six-Light Candelabra Attributed to Escalier De Cristal circa 1819
By L'Escalier de Cristal
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A remarkable and highly important pair of Empire gilt-bronze and cut-crystal six-light candelabra attributed to Escalier De Cristal De Paris. French, circa 1819. This exceptional pair of candelabra can almost certainly be attributed to the workshops of l'Escalier de Cristal de Paris. They relate in particular to a dressing table and chair, now in the collection of the Louvre, which formed part of a toilette suite that was exhibited by L'Escalier de Cristal at the 1819 Paris exhibition of the Produits de l'industrie. The present candelabra may very likely have been made as part of this suite.
