Joe Colombo italian midcentury floor lamp 70's.

About the Item

Floor lamp with direct light. Telescopic stem and base in white chromed metal designed by Joe Colombo for Oluce in the early 70s. Joe Colombo was born in Milan in 1930, a Milanese designer and architect, the son of an industrialist. After attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the Milan Polytechnic, Joe Colombo worked in the fields of painting, architecture, graphic design and industrial management. In the early 1950s he joined the nuclear painting group with Enrico Baj. An important figure, the Milanese architect and designer, after an early career in the art world, with exposure alongside artists such as Fontana, Matta, and others (his brother Gianni is an artist), he joined the mac (concrete art movement) in 1959 and devoted himself to design. After his father's death he followed the electrical equipment business and experimented with new materials. Since 1960 he has devoted himself exclusively to design. In 1968, the 14th Milan Triennale entrusted him with the arrangement of an entire sector where new design and interior architecture proposals were presented: among them was the "Programmable System for Living." In 1962 Joe Colombo opened his design studio in Milan, where he worked on architectural commissions and product design. His design projects are characterized by ingenious and sometimes daring ideas, always aimed at experimentation and the use of new materials and modern technologies to create new design solutions. In 1962 he designed Acrilica for O-luce, designed kitchen blocks for Boffi, and exhibited at MoMA New York in the 1972 show. Universal chair for Kartell in 1965 is a best seller, then Spider (compasso d'oro lamp in 1967); halogen for o-luce in 1970. In 1972 at the exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at MoMA in New York his "Global Furnishing Unity" project is exhibited; several of his works are part of MoMA's design collection. In 1984 a retrospective of his work is held at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Villeneuve d'Ascq, France. A uthor of housing systems that revolutionized the traditional conception of living. He disappears early, in 1971; many of his projects were also produced years later by Ignazia Favata, who heads his studio.
