Paavo Tynell "Trumpet" Chinese Hat Floor Lamp 9602 Brass & Rattan, Taito 1940s

About the Item

A beautiful example of the iconic Paavo Tynell floor lamp model 9602, also known as the Chinese hat. This specimen features the highly sought-after "trumpet" foot, made of cast brass, with stamps located underneath. The lamp retains all original parts and has an excellent patina, with the exception of the rattan shade, which has been renewed. The term "iconic" signifies widespread recognition for distinctive excellence, and this lamp certainly lives up to that designation. The brass foot bears a small inscription (please refer to the accompanying photos). Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a renowned Finnish designer celebrated worldwide for his exceptional lighting fixtures. Known as the man who “illuminated Finland,” his works can be found in numerous public offices and buildings, including the Finnish Parliament House and the United Nations Secretary-General’s office in New York. Tynell began his career as a sheet metal apprentice at G.W. Sohlbergs workshop in 1906. In 1912, he moved to Taidetakomo Koru Oy, a metal workshop specializing in electric light fixtures. He studied at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki and later taught there. In 1918, Paavo co-founded Taito Oy, which initially produced various metal items before focusing primarily on lamps as electricity became widespread in Finland. By the 1930s, Finnish households increasingly adopted electric lighting, boosting Taito’s sales. In the 1920s, the company primarily completed public commissions, such as lighting for the Paimio Sanatorium designed by Alvar Aalto. Following World War II and years of shortages, Tynell experienced a major breakthrough. His distinctive style gained popularity, especially in the U.S., where he sold both catalog lamps and commissioned pieces through Finland House in New York. Although his late 1940s-1950s style faced initial criticism in Finland, he remained committed to his vision. His fixtures eventually became Finland House’s best-selling products. Today, Tynell’s high-end lamps fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars worldwide, a testament to their enduring value. His commissioned works number in the thousands; however, some documentation and archival materials are incomplete.
