Copper Lights by Paavo Tynell

About the Item

Copper wall lights designed by Paavo Tynell for Hotel Juhana Herttua Pori, Finland 1953. Manufactured by Valaisinpaja for Idman, 1953. Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was a Finnish lighting designer and architect known for his significant contributions to the field of modern lighting design. He played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetics and functionality of lighting fixtures during the mid-20th century. Tynell's work is celebrated for its elegant, timeless designs and innovative use of materials and technology. Tynell was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1890. He began his career as a tinsmith and metalworker. His training in metalwork provided him with a strong foundation for his future work in lighting design. Paavo Tynell collaborated with renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto on various projects, including the design of custom lighting fixtures for Aalto's architectural projects. These collaborations helped both Tynell and Aalto gain international recognition. These sconces were created in collaboration with Olaf Küttner for the Hotel Juhana Herttua in 1955.
