About the Item

Trapezoidal shaped wall mounted niche-form light fixture designed by Gio Ponti for the m/s Augustus transatlantic ocean liner. From the Atlantico, tourist class dining room aboard the Augustus. We previously sold one of the large round ceiling lights by Gino Sarfatti. Brass with incised perforations, textured glass and enameled aluminum apparently alloyed with zinc. Takes two standard size Edison screw lightbulbs up to 100 watts each. Can be hardwired or corded. Ready to use. The luxurious transatlantic ocean liner Augustus was built in 1950 along with its sister ship Giulio Cesare for Italia Lines and the interiors were beyond sumptuous, with designs by Gio Ponti, Nino Zoncada and Gustavo Pulitzer Finali, among others. When the Augustus was retired from service with Italia Lines she was sold several times and ultimately served as a floating hotel in Manila named the MS Philippines. This light was salvaged from the forlorn Philippines when she was beached at the ship breakers in Alang, 2011. There ain't no more after this one! Literature: Piccione, Paolo. Gio Ponti Le Navi: Il Progetto Degli Internivavali 1948-1953. Milan: IDEA Books, 2007.
