ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Extra Large Antique Gothic / Medieval Style Wrought Iron & Glass Art Lantern
Located in Lisse, NL
All handcrafted, form a France Castle, Gothic light fixture. If you are a collector of rare and ancient looking Gothic antiques then this large and one of a kind pendant could be flying your way soon. With antique light fixtures as one of our specialities, we know how rare Gothic lanterns are and to have found one of this age, size, design and beauty more than made our day. Also, because this all hand-crafted specimen is completely original and in very good condition. The natural wear has only made this piece more beautiful and its authentic, medieval look and feel will never fail to impress. It may have originally hung in the entrance of a home in France or maybe above the main entrance of a medieval style chateau or castle, we are not sure. What we are certain of is that it is highly unlikely that we or you will ever find another one like it. The forged wrought iron and the hand-crafted metal style elements are just some of the wonderful features that make this work of lighting art so authentic and desirable. This chandelier even comes with the original, antique, green and yellow cathedral glass. Each of the four glass paneled sides is like a stylized medieval shield...

Arts and Crafts Sculptured Chandelier with Unique Large Colored Art Glass Shade
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning, sizeable and highly decorative Arts & Crafts light fixture. This gorgeous, five-light chandelier is another one of our recent great finds. Inspired by the beauty of nature and wildlife and motivated by the renewed interest in anything handmade, many Arts & Crafts designers and craftsman around the world have created some of the most interesting decorative art in the history of mankind. This hand-crafted and circular chandelier too is the result of a great design and an equally impressive execution which makes this antique an absolute joy to own and look at. The organic design with its stylized flower motifs and the unique and colorful glass panels incorporated in that design has created a work of lighting art that will never fail to impress. The stunning, hand hammered canopy with the perfectly inserted 4 lights is an important feature of this work of lighting art, but the hand-forged body of this pendant with its amazing patina is at least as impressive. The overal shape, the unique decor, its impressive size and its second to none patina make this one of a kind chandelier stand out like no modern light fixture ever could. If you already have a place and a space in mind for it then this fixture could be yours to enjoy soon. The workmanship that has gone into creating this chandelier and the sustainable materials that were used, make sure that this work of lighting art will last for centuries and that it can be enjoyed by many generations to come. Mind you, this work of lighting art too will be professionally rewired (to the highest standard) for safe and immediate usage the world over. And if you like this grand pendant light...
