Arts and Crafts More Lighting
ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE
Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.
The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.
American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.
Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

The designer and artist who created this Arts & Crafts work of lighting art must have been inspired by the wonderful colors that mother nature has to offer in the late afternoons and evenings in the summer. Especially the copper red light that the sun creates when disappearing under the horizon seems the source of inspiration for this artist. With the colors in this particular alabaster shade AND in the brass 'frame' corresponding with the marvelous colors at sundown this one of a kind pendant really is a joy to own and to look at. In our experience it is also at that time of day that swallows are the most active. Just like the embossed swallows in this shade we too have seen them circling above and around a swimming pool in the Canary Islands. By the way, the workmanship that has gone into hand-crafting this remarkable chandelier is of a level that you don't find anymore in this day and age. Never mind the amount of time it must have taken to first hand-draw and then completely hand-craft this gem. We have said it many times before and we will say it again here: both with the light switched on and off, the colors in this alabaster shade are much warmer and much more beautiful than in our photos. You can take our word for it. Because of the many colors and 'patches' one could also say that this pendant (when looking at it from different sides and angles) has many faces. That too is the beauty of surrounding yourself with truly natural materials.

All handcrafted using quality materials only this Arts and Crafts era chandelier breathes the kind of class that early 20th century craftsman were known for. Because of the stylish floral patterns this antique work of lighting art is like an ode to mother nature herself. We 'Dutchies' have a special connection with flowers in general and with daisy flowers in particular and if this antique light fixture is not Dutch then we understand very well why it ended up here. The three brass arms and also the 'base' in which the large, cut-glass shade hangs all come with stunning and typical Arts and Crafts, embossed style elements / decorations. All the detailed and precise engravings in all the glass shades were hand-done and for all the glass shades to be in mint condition after more than 100 years, to us, is like a minor miracle. The large, handcrafted, hand-engraved and partially colored glass shade too has stylized flower motifs in it and the combination of materials makes this antique chandelier an absolute joy to look at. With as much as four sockets this relatively small chandelier can easily light up a living room or dining area of a regular-size home or apartment. Mind you, this antique light fixture will be wired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the country where she will be used and enjoyed.
