About the Item

Pair of Wrought Iron Lamps, Vine Motif – Muller Frères, Lunéville, Art Deco, Circa 1925 Elegance and refinement define this rare pair of wrought iron lamps, a unique creation by Muller Frères of Lunéville, dating from the 1920s. A true homage to the stylized natural forms of the Art Deco movement, each lamp evokes a poetic vine trellis, from which a signed Muller Frères blown glass tulip delicately appears to be suspended. The finely wrought ironwork unfolds like graceful branches adorned with vine leaves and grape clusters, forming a delicate dome above the glass shade. The base, shaped like a small cup-like dish, gathers the four trellis uprights around an abundant grape cluster, creating a discreet space where small precious objects or jewellery can be placed. The lamps feature a cleverly integrated electrical system, enhancing the illusion of a floating light source and providing a warm, soft, and enveloping glow. Specifications: • Period: Art Deco, circa 1925 • Signature: Muller Frères, Lunéville • Height: 38 cm • Diameter: 21 cm • Materials: Wrought iron, glass Condition: Fully restored in our workshop: the metal has been stripped, treated, and repatinated. The electrification is entirely new and complies with current safety standards. A rare collector’s piece, even more exceptional as a matched pair, ideal for interiors seeking authenticity, character, and prestige. Muller Frères of Lunéville – A Brief History Muller Frères is a renowned name in both Art Nouveau and Art Deco, celebrated for its artistic glass creations and exceptional lighting designs. Founded in Lunéville, Lorraine (France), the company earned its place among the great names of French glassmaking, alongside Daum and Gallé. The Origins: The story of Muller Frères begins with a talented family passionate about the art of glass. The Muller brothers—Henri, Camille, Désiré, Eugène, and Victor—were part of a large family of nine children raised in a region famous for its glassmaking traditions. Several of the brothers trained under the master glassmaker Émile Gallé in Nancy, a pivotal figure in the Art Nouveau movement. This experience allowed them to master advanced techniques and cultivate their own artistic vision. The Foundation of the Workshop (circa 1895–1910): By the late 19th century, the Muller brothers established their own workshop in Lunéville, near Nancy. The firm specialized in producing vases, bowls, lamps, and chandeliers made of engraved, blown, and sometimes enameled glass. Inspired by nature, their designs aligned with the Art Nouveau style, emphasizing floral motifs, organic forms, and delicate craftsmanship. The Peak – Transition to Art Deco (1920s): As artistic tastes evolved in the early 20th century, the Mullers successfully transitioned to the Art Deco aesthetic, characterized by more geometric lines and abstract motifs. They developed innovative collections and focused heavily on interior lighting: chandeliers, wall sconces, table lamps—often paired with wrought iron or bronze mounts. Their mastery of blown pâte de verre and acid-etched techniques allowed them to create pieces of remarkable quality, combining subtle colour gradients with unique textures. Most pieces are signed “Muller Frères Lunéville”, ensuring authenticity and craftsmanship. Decline and Legacy: Like many artisanal workshops, Muller Frères suffered from economic downturns and the upheaval of World War II. The company gradually declined and eventually closed its doors by the mid-20th century. Nonetheless, the legacy of Muller Frères endures. Their works remain highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts, and are featured in prestigious museum and private collections worldwide—testaments to their enduring influence on the history of French glassmaking. Today, Muller Frères Lunéville stands as a symbol of French glass artistry, synonymous with elegance, innovation, and excellence.
