Rare and Important Antique Revolving Bookcase by Horrix of The Hague, Holland
Located in Lisse, NL
Extremely rare and stylish, mid-1800s bookcase, by one of Holland's finest. In 2010 the The Hague Municipal Museum (Haags Gemeentemuseum) organized an exhibition by the name of 'Koninklijk Goedgekeurd' which roughly translates to 'Royalty Approved'. On display in this exhibition were some of the rarest pieces of furniture by the best furniture makers in the history of the Netherlands. The work and history of 19th century, Dutch top furniture makers H.P. Mutters and Horrix (both of the Hague) were celebrated in this exhibition. It was named 'Royalty Approved', because both makers were 'purveyor to the court' and had provided many Dutch Royals with the best furniture available in that era. This revolving bookcase has been in our posession for more than 10 years and in our combined 35+ years of experience in this trade we have never seen another one. Not in books, not on the web, not in a museum. It is therefor too that we are quite certain that this revolving bookcase by Horrix would have been on display in the 2010 exhibition had the curators known about it. This unique specimen is created out of various woodtypes, it is beautifully designed and executed, it stands as strong and stable as the day it was handcrafted (over 150 years ago), it still has the original porcelain casters, it revolves perfectly on its original base, it comes with the perfect maker's mark underneath (as shown in image 12) and it has the most beautiful and warm patina. All hand-crafted in what in the rest of the world is better known as the Victorian era, in the Netherlands this style is known as Willem III...
