Antique Chinese Mooncake Press, c. 1850

About the Item

Dated to the mid-19th century, this rustic wood press is carved with twenty round molds used for shaping festive mooncakes. Packed with lotus root, red bean, or other regional fillings, mooncakes are a delicacy eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival as an offering between friends and family. Each mold included in this set is carved with a unique character, stylized as calligraphy brushwork. Beautifully aged and full of character, we love this humble kitchen tool as a storied token from the past. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
