About the Item

A very handsome and impressive pair of relief portrait busts in copper depicting portrait busts of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) on the left, and Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) on the right. Dimensions of each are: (Wellington) 12” high x 10.5” wide x 1.75” deep, (Napoleon) 12.5” high x 11” wide x 1.75” deep. Both of these finely detailed plaques are signed beneath the truncation, N. PALMER S.C. (probably that of Nathaniel Palmer, active 1829-1846). Ref: A profile portrait relief in wax titled ‘Unknown Man’ signed N. Palmer is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum with an attribution to Nathaniel Palmer, working 1829-1846.
