About the Item

Presented is an original "Johnson's World, Showing the Distribution of the Characteristic Forest Trees, Principal Useful Plants and Minerals" by Prof. A. Guyot. This map was issued as page 13 in the 1870 edition of “Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas.” The map is engraved, with attractive hand coloring and a decorative border. It is a large color-coded map of the world, shown on Mercator's Projection, divided by temperature zone and marked with specific regions of forests and types of trees and plants, vegetables, and fruits that grow in that area. Each temperature zone is marked with mean temperatures. Areas of peak crops, like tobacco, coffee, cacao, spices, cotton, and tea, are emphasized and circled in hot pink. There are also two small inset maps at bottom left and bottom right. The map "Useful Metals," at bottom left, indicates gold, silver, lead, iron, and copper deposits on the world map. At bottom right, the "Coal" world map identifies areas with coal deposits and diamond mines. The publishing company of A.J. Johnson was a successor of Johnson and Ward, a successor to Johnson and Browning, themselves a successor to the famous publishing company, J. H. Colton and Company. A combination of both new plates and older, updated ones, all of the maps in this famous 1870 atlas were compiled, drawn, and engraved under the supervision of A. J. Johnson. This 1870 publication of “Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas” is also notable for its inclusion of a treatise on physical geography by Professor A. Guyot, marking the first year his essay appeared and his name featured on the cover. The atlas was recognized with a First Prize Medal at the Universal Exposition of 1867 in Paris. “Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas” was a comprehensive world atlas featuring 60 full-color maps. Designed to be both educational and a decorative addition to a home library, it reflected the 19th-century fascination with detailed and ornate cartographic publications. In addition to maps, the atlas included geographical, statistical, and historical information, as well as a dictionary of religious denominations, a testament to its extensive scope and utility. The treatise on physical geography by A. Guyot further demonstrates that period’s growing interest in scientific inquiry, making the atlas a valuable resource not just for navigation and geography, but also for understanding the natural world. 1863 "Lloyd's New Map of the United States, the Canadas, and New Brunswick"
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “Lloyd's New Map of the United States, the Canadas and New Brunswick, From the latest Surveys, Showing Every Railroad & Station Finished to June 1863, and the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts.” A large, Civil War-era hanging map of the United States and adjacent territories, this map covers the area from the Atlantic Ocean and extends as far west as the 103 meridian, to “Dacotah,” Nebraska, Kansas, "Indian Territory," and Texas. The southern continuation of Florida is shown in an inset map along the right margin. This map was published by J. T. Lloyd, in New York, in 1863. According to the publisher’s marking at lower right, this map was originally issued in two states: "in Sheets, Colored" for 50 cents, and "Varnished nicely, with Rollers" for $1. Throughout the map, the counties are colored and the towns and cities well labeled. A reference key in the bottom margin provides symbols for railroads, turnpikes and wagon roads, state capitals, cities and towns, and village post offices. As emphasized in the map’s title, this map is especially notable for the countless railway lines and stations depicted, with distances noted between points, listing “every railroad and finished station to June 1863.” Additionally, two shipping agents and their routes are drawn out of New York City. The map includes details of the steamship routes into New York and Philadelphia from Liverpool and on to California and Oregon via an overland Nicaraguan trek, presumably to assist gold rush emigrants. This expansive and impressive map depicts the eastern half of the United States in the third year of the Civil War. In order not to recognize the legitimacy of the Confederate States of America, each state is shown in the same manner as the Union states. The only indication that the American Civil War was in progress when this map was published is a printed notice that Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy, wishes to acquire a quote on 100 copies of Lloyd’s Mississippi River map...
