Circa 1880 French Gothic Style Baldachin or Statuary Niche
About the Item
Circa 1880 French Gothic style Baldachin or Statuary Niche. Derived from canopies for processions, the term has come to signify all such coverings, most famously the Bernini high alter baldachin of St. Peter's, Rome. Hand-carved of walnut & chestnut, this canopy is supported by fluted columns, all crowned with Gothic Revival spires & a gold leafed Celtic cross (possibly Brittany with this touch & the native woods). 54" h., 22" x 22".
