About the Item

France, circa 1910 The large wooden trunk overall covered with brown LV monogram stamped leather, bound in blackened brass with wooden laths, on four castors, with brass studs all over and a brass lock numbered 02246 and the original key. The near mint condition interior retains all the original ivory canvas covered trays, four in total, of which one with yellow leather lidded compartments. On the inside it is numbered 191216 on a label next to the brand label. The Service Patrimoine of Louis Vuitton has verified it is in their archive and thus authentic. Each side of the trunk has painted cross-bands in light-blue and yellow. W. 100 x H. 57,5 x D. 54 cm Provenance: Noble family, Tuscany The history of Louis Vuitton is intertwined with the evolution of travel. Prior to the advent of Vuitton's lightweight, waterproof trunks, travelers used cumbersome wooden chests. Vuitton, recognizing a niche market, began designing trunks that were not only durable but also stylish. The materials used, such as poplar wood for the frame, canvas for the exterior, and brass for the hardware, were chosen for their longevity and quality. They represent the material culture of a bygone era, indicating socioeconomic status and the emergence of leisure travel among the affluent classes. The monogram canvas, introduced by Georges Vuitton in 1896, served as a brand identifier and a mark of authenticity. It was a response to the increasing number of imitations following the brand's success. The trunks are a physical manifestation of Louis Vuitton's brand development, showcasing early marketing strategies such as distinctive branding and combating counterfeiting. The design of the trunk with its flat top and bottom was a departure from the traditional dome-topped chests, which were ill-suited for stacking during travel. This innovation reflected the changing modes of transportation, particularly the use of steamships, where luggage was stored in tight quarters. The trunks reflect the transition from bulky and ornate Victorian design to more practical and streamlined forms, embodying the principles of emerging modernism. The custom colours on the side of this trunk suggest that it's provenance is a member of the Rothschild family. The colours yellow and blue are the exact Rotschild racing colours.
