Rare 18th C. Meissen Sleigh w/ Court Jesters Fröhlich & Schmiedel, After Kändler
Located in New York, NY
A Rare 18th-Century Meissen Porcelain Horse-Drawn Sleigh Group Featuring the Court Jesters Joseph Fröhlich and Gottfried Schmiedel, After a Model by Johann Joachim Kändler. This finely modeled and painted Meissen porcelain group, created circa 1750, captures a dynamic and theatrical sleigh ride featuring the court jesters Fröhlich and Schmiedel. The composition is anchored by a galloping white horse adorned with a blue cloth draped over its back, trimmed with gilt tassels. The harness, with delicate chains, connects the horse to an elaborately detailed sleigh with scrolling gilt accents and openwork elements. The sleigh glides over a textured, snow-covered base, sculpted to mimic the uneven terrain. At the center of this lively scene, Fröhlich, dressed in vibrant carnival attire with a green hat and yellow cape, stands on the runners of the sleigh, leaning forward to embrace and steal a kiss from Countess Friesen. However, the "Countess" is, in fact, Schmiedel in disguise, adding to the humor of the piece. Schmiedel wears a floral-patterned gown with intricate hand-painted blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and red, complemented by a white apron and a red bonnet. The finely painted facial features capture the moment's theatricality, as Schmiedel grips the reins while seemingly playing along with the jest. In front of them, a small monkey with wings sits perched at the sleigh’s edge, holding a dish with two burning hearts, reinforcing the amorous and playful nature of the composition. The back of the base bears the Meissen underglaze blue crossed swords mark, confirming its origin at the renowned German porcelain manufacturer. The model was first created by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1741, during his tenure as Meissen’s chief modeler. Kändler’s ability to animate porcelain figures with expressive gestures and dynamic movement is evident in this work, reflecting the theatrical influences of the period. Meissen, established in the early 1700s under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was the first European porcelain manufacturer to successfully produce hard-paste porcelain. The factory became synonymous with innovation, refinement, and technical excellence, with Kändler playing a key role in developing its sculptural traditions. Meissen’s 18th...

Detailed Antique Map of Hungary and Transylvania by Tirion, 1753
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: Nieuwe Kaart van’t Koninkryk Hongaryen en Zevenbergen by Isaak Tirion, 1753 – Antique Map of Hungary and Transylvania Description: This is an antique 1753 map titled *Nieuwe Kaart van’t Koninkryk Hongaryen en Zevenbergen*, created by the notable Dutch cartographer and publisher Isaak Tirion. The map showcases the Kingdom of Hungary and the region of Transylvania (referred to as "Zevenbergen") as they appeared in the mid-18th century. Tirion’s maps are well-known for their clarity, precision, and attention to geographic detail, making them highly sought after by collectors of antique maps. This map provides a detailed view of Hungary and Transylvania, including borders, towns, cities, rivers, and mountain ranges. It was created using the latest discoveries and updates of the time and reflects the political landscape of the region, which was part of the Habsburg Empire during a period of territorial changes and consolidations. The map’s borders are highlighted with color to distinguish different regions, and significant cities such as Buda, Pest, and Debrecen are clearly labeled. Isaak Tirion was one of the most prominent Dutch publishers of the 18th century, particularly known for his *Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas* (New and Concise Hand Atlas) series, which included a wide range of maps of Europe and beyond. His works were appreciated for their cartographic accuracy and artistic quality. This map is a valuable piece for collectors interested in 18th-century European maps, particularly those that highlight Central Europe, Hungary, Transylvania, and the Habsburg Empire. It is a fine example of the craftsmanship of Isaak Tirion and offers insight into the historical geography of the region. Habit of a Lady of Quality in France in a Hand-Colored Engraving, 1757
Located in Langweer, NL
An original antique hand-colored print of a woman in an elaborate dress, which is described as the "Habit of a Lady of Quality in France." This suggests that the attire represented is that of an affluent or noble woman from France, possibly from the 18th century given the style of the dress and the method of printmaking. The dress itself features a rich blue gown with gold accents and what appears to be an underskirt or petticoat of a contrasting color, potentially gold or yellow. The woman is wearing a headdress, which also fits with the fashion of the European upper class of the period. Such prints were often part of fashion plates or costume books that depicted the latest styles and were used by tailors, dressmakers, and the fashion-conscious elite to stay up-to-date with the latest trends from various European courts and cities. It's a detailed representation of historical clothing...

The underside of each plate retains the silversmith's center punch mark in addition to the original item numbers 9, 10 and 12 and the original scratch weight of 32 troy ounces and 4 pennyweights (32.2 troy ounces), as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 29.9 troy ounces. Larger second course dishes such as these are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Circa 1750, English Georgian ii Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
Circa 1750 English Georgian II period mahogany armchair. The George II period was most noted for its intricate chairs. Like the other Georgian periods, this one was named after the monarch during the time. Under George II, mahogany became the predominant wood used for fine furniture. Many of the styles were symmetrical and had architectural curves, inspired by the Gothic. These works were very expensive and only the rich could afford and buy them. This specific armchair has a frame entirely carved from mahogany, which was a strong and durable wood that was also naturally water resistant and offers natural resistance against pests. The back of the chair has a splat design. Splats were an important element of eighteenth-century English chairs, offering support. It originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...
