Carved, sculpted walnut mirror Venice, about mid-18th century It measures 53.93 x 33.46 in (137 x 85 cm); weight 30.86 lb (14 kg) State of conservation: slight gluing The walnut mirror has an elongated rectangular shape, crowned with a decorative three-lobed sculpted and carved molding. The frame encircles the mirror with a series of rabbet grooves. A rocaille carved molding is attached above, showing off its curved decorative elements. These descend along the sides of the mirror frame and are further enhanced with the presence of volutes "pennaccette", small leafy elements and minute buds. The mercury mirror is original. As a decorative element, mirrors represent a refined expression of the Rococo style in Venice around the middle of the XVIII century. During this period, decorated mirrors, previously use...

Antique Sterling Silver Tea and Sugar Cadies
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A magnificent, fine and impressive set of three antique Georgian English sterling silver sugar and tea caddies - boxed; an addition to our silver teaware collection These magnificent, fine and impressive antique Georgian silver sugar and tea caddies each have an oblong shaped form. The surface of each antiquecaddy is embellished with impressive embossed and chased scroll and foliate decoration incorporating a stylised animalistic mask to the upper portion. The decoration to either side incorporates a scene depicting a woman arranging flowers, and the posterior surface bears a structure, all in the chinoiserie style. The anterior surfaces these antique tea caddies incorporate scroll and leaf bordered cartouches, each displaying a contemporary engraved coat of arms. The opposing scrolling lower portion of each caddy composes a shaped rim and foot. These caddies are fitted with the original hinged cast silver covers, ornamented with further foliate and floral decoration and surmounted with impressive floral finials. These Georgian silver tea caddies and sugar canister are fitted to the fine and impressive, original hinged wood and skin covered presentation casket, bearing the original velvet lined interior. The presentation box is fitted with the original silver escutcheon and carrying handle, in addition to four bracket style feet emanating from the corners. These magnificent silver boxes are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. Condition These antique 18th century tea/sugar caddies are a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in magnificent condition. The cast, embossed and chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved ornamentation is very crisp; the definition of these details indicates these caddies have seen little or no use. The original casket is distressed in keeping with age, however, remains in working condition. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caddies are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the magnificent gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these 18th century tea caddies. Dimensions Sugar Caddy...

Rare 18th C. Meissen Sleigh w/ Court Jesters Fröhlich & Schmiedel, After Kändler
Located in New York, NY
A Rare 18th-Century Meissen Porcelain Horse-Drawn Sleigh Group Featuring the Court Jesters Joseph Fröhlich and Gottfried Schmiedel, After a Model by Johann Joachim Kändler. This finely modeled and painted Meissen porcelain group, created circa 1750, captures a dynamic and theatrical sleigh ride featuring the court jesters Fröhlich and Schmiedel. The composition is anchored by a galloping white horse adorned with a blue cloth draped over its back, trimmed with gilt tassels. The harness, with delicate chains, connects the horse to an elaborately detailed sleigh with scrolling gilt accents and openwork elements. The sleigh glides over a textured, snow-covered base, sculpted to mimic the uneven terrain. At the center of this lively scene, Fröhlich, dressed in vibrant carnival attire with a green hat and yellow cape, stands on the runners of the sleigh, leaning forward to embrace and steal a kiss from Countess Friesen. However, the "Countess" is, in fact, Schmiedel in disguise, adding to the humor of the piece. Schmiedel wears a floral-patterned gown with intricate hand-painted blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and red, complemented by a white apron and a red bonnet. The finely painted facial features capture the moment's theatricality, as Schmiedel grips the reins while seemingly playing along with the jest. In front of them, a small monkey with wings sits perched at the sleigh’s edge, holding a dish with two burning hearts, reinforcing the amorous and playful nature of the composition. The back of the base bears the Meissen underglaze blue crossed swords mark, confirming its origin at the renowned German porcelain manufacturer. The model was first created by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1741, during his tenure as Meissen’s chief modeler. Kändler’s ability to animate porcelain figures with expressive gestures and dynamic movement is evident in this work, reflecting the theatrical influences of the period. Meissen, established in the early 1700s under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was the first European porcelain manufacturer to successfully produce hard-paste porcelain. The factory became synonymous with innovation, refinement, and technical excellence, with Kändler playing a key role in developing its sculptural traditions. Meissen’s 18th...

Baroque Gilt Wood Console Table, Southern Germany 18th Century
Located in Belmont, MA
This original 18th century Baroque console table stands out for its finely carved gilt wood details. It is the perfect little eye catcher for a smaller entryway. If you are looking for an eclectic mix of antique and new, you could easily add a contemporary painting or mirror above it, This exquisite little console table derives from Southern Germany. It shows the typical features of the 17th-18th century baroque design vocabulary. Consequently acanthus leaves and scrollwork embellish its otherwise symmetrical structure. It comes in original condition with the expected wear and tear and some retouches from earlier restorations and measures H 29.53 x W 25.99 x D 13.78 inches (H 75 cm x W 66 cm x D 35 cm). During the 17th century, the Baroque style had a marked effect upon furniture design throughout western Europe. Large wardrobes, cupboards, and cabinets had twisted columns, broken pediments, and heavy moldings. The Baroque style was adopted in the Low Countries in the 1620s and extended late into the 17th century, when Germany and England began to develop it. In southern Germany the French influence on furniture design was more prominent than in the western or northern parts, where Dutch and English styles were predominant. The big centers for the production of south German Baroque furniture...

Set of Six Blue and White Plates from the Nanking Cargo Shipwreck
Located in Atlanta, GA
Set of six blue and white Qing dynasty porcelain plates from the Nanking Cargo shipwreck. A large cache of porcelain and other merchandise was discovered on the wreck of a Dutch East India Company ship, the Geldermalsen, which sank in the South China Seas in 1752 and was discovered in 1985. The ship had been bound for Amsterdam from Canton when it crashed into a reef and sank along with its cargo of tea, raw silk, porcelain and gold ingots. Some 235 years after it set out on its journey, the cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and sold at Christie's in Amsterdam in 1986. These delicate porcelain plates are decorated in the charming "Boatman and six-flower border" pattern, which shows a fisherman punting his boat within a broad river landscape, with a two-story pavilion beside a pine tree, a Chinese parasol...
