Mid-20th Century Handmade Tibetan Throw Rug
Located in New York, NY
A vintage Tibetan throw rug handmade during the mid-20th century. Measures: 3' 1" x 5' 8" Chinese Rugs & Carpet: The craft of the hand-knotted carpet in China, and the surrounding areas including Mongolia and Tibet, extends into the early centuries of the first millennium, C.E., but we really have a firm grasp only beginning in the later 16th century with large, very coarsely woven carpets, often depicting dragons, created for the Imperial Forbidden City palaces. Chinese carpets have always been commercial and there are no tribal groups responsible for any of the carpet weaving strains. When the Ming Dynasty fell in 1644, with no Imperial patrons, production moved to the city of Ningxia in north central China where several workshops turned out more finely woven pieces for the Mandarins of the administrative Ch’ing bureaucracy and well-to-do merchants. Ningxia was the major Chinese carpet center up through most of the 19th century, with first allover and then medallion designs on cotton foundations in medium weaves. Palettes were initially limited to yellows, dark blue and cream, but later widened to include reds, browns and even green. These antiques were the first Chinese carpets to be exported to the West and they fitted in well with the craze for Chinese blue-and-white porcelain in the second half of the 19th century. Ningxia also wove shaped and rectangular small rugs for saddle underlays, chair (“throne”) seats and shaped backs, pillar carpets...

Antique Tibetan Monastic Tiger Rug
Located in Milan, IT
Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. The tiger pelt became a symbol of high rank in Tibet, employed almost exclusively on weavings which belonged to the religious as well as secular upper class. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...

Located in Barrington, IL
A striking example of Himalayan textile artistry, this 19th Century Tibetan Saddle Blanket features a richly woven floral pattern in shades of navy, blue, pink, yellow, and red. Originating from Tibet in the late 1800s, this blanket exemplifies the vibrant aesthetics and skilled craftsmanship of Tibetan weavers. Uniquely constructed, the piece is formed by joining two individually woven floral panels, creating a balanced and harmonious composition intended for practical use as a saddle blanket. The original red cloth backing remains intact, and the textile is in excellent condition considering its age and intended use. Both decorative and historically significant, this antique textile is ideally suited for display as wall art, offering texture, color, and cultural depth to interiors ranging from global-inspired and bohemian to traditional and eclectic. As a rare piece of 19th-century Tibetan equestrian decor, it captures the spirit of nomadic life and adds a sense of journey and history to any space.
