About the Item

Prayer is one of the basic pillars of the Muslim religion, so it is not surprising that the carpet is used for this function, as one of the highest artistic manifestations of Islam. The carpet becomes sacred and pure space that isolates the worshipper from the physical world in which he or she finds himself or herself. Being small in size, it will be like having a mosque with you at all times, regardless of location and company. Its use dates back to the early days of Islam, and many carpets from the early caliphates have been preserved in mosques. Prayer rugs feature highly symbolic and metaphorical motifs in their graphic compositions, echoing images and decorative elements typical of mosques. The main element of the composition is the Mihrab (or Mehrab), which symbolizes the niche covered by an arch and indicates the direction of the temple of Mecca (Quibla) in each mosque. This niche represents the Gate of Heaven, and by pointing in the direction of Mecca, it also indicates in which direction prayer should take place. This decoration is represented in different forms, usually specific to each area of origin. Often in prayer rugs one also finds floral decorations and water pools, all of which can be traced back to the garden theme. This is not a coincidental representation, since in Islam the supernatural world and in particular Paradise is described precisely as a garden. Regarding the color characteristics of the Anatolian prayer rug, the colors are often bright, strong and intense. They may seem difficult coloring, but they still turn out to be pleasing and beautiful to the eye as in the prayer we present from the unusual decoration reminiscent of fountains in Islamic gardens.
