cc-tapis Esquisses Collection Tapis Rectangulaire Tenture by Faye Toogood

About the Item

On the occasion of Milan Design Week, 17 – 23 April 2023, Maison Matisse invited the British designer Faye Toogood to interpret a Chinese black ink on white paper from the book Dessins: Thèmes et Variations (1943) by Henri Matisse. The result of the collaboration with Faye Toogood is a collection of furniture for the living room or bedroom that reveals a least well-known universe of the master, and which Maison Matisse wants to bring out, far removed from the colourful work we are used to seeing. His black and white drawings. The Esquisses collection marks a new step for Maison Matisse with its first objects in a monochrome palette of black, white, and natural beiges. The pared-down colours of a drawing, they foreground the essentials of patterns, and highlight the fluidity and liberty of intuitive gestures that Henri Matisse transmitted even with simple ink on paper. Toogood had previously dedicated her studio’s Assemblage 5 collection (2017) to Henri Matisse’s Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, a church where the artist created every detail from the stained glass to the tiles and priest’s vestments. “The totality of the chapel informed a real spiritual connection in me, and I continue to have a longterm connection to Matisse’s legacy,” says the designer. With Maison Matisse, Toogood delves further into the artist’s influence, and using her own form- based vocabulary, she transforms freehand drawings into both flat patterns that decorate the blanket and rugs, and into volumes that become chairs and tables, expanding the linear images she created to new proportions and new forms. “I’m always fascinated by the play between two-dimensional and three-dimensional creation,” she says. Born in France. Designed in Milan. Produced in Nepal. cc-tapis is an Italian company which produces contemporary hand-knotted rugs which are created in Nepal by expert Tibetan artisans. A strong respect for the materials and for the culture of this ancient craft is reflected in the company’s eco-friendly approach to every step of production, ranging from the hand spinning of the softest Himalayan wool to the use of purified rainwater for the washing of the final products, making each one of cc-tapis rugs unique. Far from mass production, cc-tapis aims to offer a tailored service to those who understand and enjoy a high-end product, where a three month production time contains a story of ageless culture. The rug is made with Himalayan 80% Wool, 20% Silk coming from the areas surrounding the atelier. 152.000 individual knots per square meter approximately.
