DeSede Ds-747/04 Multifunctional Sofa in Black Leather Seat and Back Upholstery
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Once upon a time, there was a master saddler with his mind set on taking bulky, thick leather and using his perfect craftsmanship to make it comfortable and cozy. For genera-tions, the legacy of what Ernst Lüthy created when he established de Sede in the 1960s has been reflected in DS-747: form follows function. Be it sitting, sleeping, dining or relaxing – thanks to its essence of excellence, this all-rounder offers optimum functionality: with a few easy flicks of the wrist, the armrests can be tilted independently of each other and the soft seating surfaces enlarged. The exposed back lends DS-747 its lightness as a small sculpture with a high function – a sofa created to sit not on but in. A marvel in three dimensions, DS-747 is perfectly suited for small spaces or city apartments. If visitors spontaneously decide to stay longer, this elegant yet compact sofa offers an outstand-ing place to sleep – the armrests can be folded down with a few very easy flicks of the wrist. A sophisticated mechanism can be used to enlarge the seating surface, while the deliberately exposed back offers a glimpse into the functions of DS-747. The multifunctional sofa...

De Sede DS-707 Sofa in Perla Touch Leather Upholstery by Philippe Malouin
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The DS-707 is the modern composition of handmade leather and contemporary design. The flowing, soft transitions combine the postmodern era of Swiss furniture design with the clear open structures of brutalism that inspired designer Philippe Malouin. Available as a comfortable armchair or as a modular sofa that can be combined in infinite ways, the DS-707 is the visual perfection of form that gives every room a unique highlight. Where the St. Lawrence River Montreal flows in a serpentine pattern, a residential complex marked by the architectural style of brutalism rises up on a small headland, the famous Habitat 67. 354 concrete blocks arranged in a stepped pattern adorn a part of Montreal’s multifaceted skyline, designed by architect Moshe Safdie...

De Sede DS-600 Stool in Black Leather by U. Berger, E. Peduzzi Riva, H. Ulrich
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Launched in 1972, DS-600 is an indestructible, variable modular system of upholstered furniture consisting of individual, addable armchair elements. These consist of an L-shaped hard foam core covered with a down-lined and leather-covered cushion. The elements are connected with a plug-in hinge and a construction made of hide and zipper. The stool element complements the famous snake-shaped seat with an intermediate and end element. The longest DS-600 currently stands in the palace of the ruling family of a sultanate - where legendary 406 upholstery elements in rainbow colors join up to create a circular or serpentine endless sofa. The affectionately named “Tatzelwurm” sculpture also took up residency in the living rooms of Tina Turner, Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger and became the “star” of numerous Bond films - New York’s legendary “Studio 54” also adorned itself with the trendy sofa designed by a Swiss designer collective in the early 1970s. The idea of a convex and concave curved sofa was brilliant, but transforming it into a producible item of seating furniture proved more difficult than anticipated. Together with the De Sede development team, the designer collective spent a year building countless prototypes; almost all of them were criticized and rejected. But the designers showed nerves of steel, and DS-600 gradually became what it is today: an indestructible, variable modular system of upholstered furniture consisting of individual, addable armchair elements. Additional information: Material: Leather Model: DS/600 Stool...

DS-9090 Handstitched Leather Beanbag Chair by De Sede
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Beanbag chair DS-9090 by De Sede. Beanbags have long been a part of the De Sede inventory, but the manufacture has now gone one step further with the launch of DS-9090, a beanbag that defines sitting itself. A pyramid-shaped insert made of high quality, stabile DS-SELECT leather gives the ‘shapeless’ model a seat direction and seating hollow – an innovation in the history of the beanbag. This step optimizes both the seating comfort and the appearance of the undefined shape of the beanbag. As with previous beanbag models, DS-9090 is filled with De Sede fill, a combination of foam and beads, and the insert in DS-SELECT is integrated with a handstitched seam. Whether as an eye-catcher in the living room, a stylish, additional seating option, or a cozy and relaxing object around the home, DS-9090 can be seen in the definition of its eternally beautiful, characteristic beanbag shape. Details: Standard configuration: Seating hollow in SELECT black leather. For casing upholstery options, please choose from SELECT leather swatches...

Located in Brooklyn, NY
Opulent elements for modular use. The architectural structure of DS-21 is created by a metal frame that surrounds individual cushion volumes, seemingly carrying them effortlessly. The opulent elements counteract the clear lines of the frame. They function as modules that can be relocated. DS-21 comes in different upholstery combinations, with leather or fabric covers, and in three different frame widths with matt black or high-gloss chrome-plated metal legs. An armchair rounds out this family of seats. The DS-21 range is complemented by coffee tables and side tables with glass tops in different versions. This sculpture looks as if it has always stood there. A statement, essentially: I’ve been here forever. And yet: the proportions seem fresh and new, unused and inviting, classic and modern. DS-21 is the work of Stephan Hürlemann. The Appenzell native studied architecture at ETH Zurich and was the partner of designer Hannes Wettstein, after whose death in 2008 he took over as creative director of the world-renowned Zurich studio. The lounger is a multifunctional relaxation furniture, where the back and the armrests can be individually and continuously adjusted and brought into different positions. This unusual seating furniture thus becomes a dynamic, relaxation-promoting system for the entire muscula-ture. The extraordinarily versa-tile usability enables complete psycho-physical relaxation; by extending the sitting and lying with legs positioned high to very high, the lounger serves to prevent leg swelling and back pain. The synthesis of elegant form and function is rounded off by the masterful workmanship of high-quality leather just typical of de Sede. The DS-142 thus becomes an ideal and versatile recliner. Unique Chairs, Sofas and Other Seating for Sale on 1stDibs

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
