Set of 2 Chair One in white by Konstantin Grcic for MAGIS
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A die-cast aluminium shell made up of many small, perforated and triangular faces. Chair_One is in a certain sense built like a football, i.e. with a series of flat ele- ments joined one to the other at angles to create a three-dimensional shape. All this is achieved by exploiting the potential of die-casting which is a precise technology allowing complex three-dimensional shapes to be obtained from metal (in this case aluminium). The result is therefore a chair in which the spaces prevail over the solid parts to characterise its aesthetic quality. Chair_One has now become a classic of the future. Chairs, stools, tables and seating systems for domestic and contract use (bars and restaurants). Chair_One: legs in polished, anodised or painted aluminium; concrete base painted transparent natural or black; base and seat in die-cast aluminium treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in polyester powder. Suitable for outdoor use (painted version). Flame-retardant. Also available cushions in fabric (Kvadrat “Steelcut Trio” or “Steelcut 2”) or in leather for indoor use and cushions in polyurethane for outdoor use. Stool_One: legs in anodised aluminium or painted in polyester powder. Seat in die-cast aluminium treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in poly- ester powder. Suitable for outdoor use. Also available cushions in fabric (Kvadrat “Steelcut Trio” or “Steelcut 2”) or in leather for indoor use. Table_One_Bistrot: frame in anodised aluminium natural or black (suitable for out- door use); concrete base painted transparent natural or black; top in HPL laminate. Chair_One Public Seating System 1: concrete bases painted transparent clear, suitable for floor-fixing. Bar in anodised aluminium. "Safari" Chairs in Patinated Cognac Leather, Europe ca 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Born from both adventure and practicality, the safari chair has transcended its 18th-century origins being lugged around the great outdoors to become a beloved icon of design. Here, the classic pairing of the elegant patinated leather is paired with beautiful solid wood to command attention which is partly why this chair style remains popular in contemporary interior design. The design of this pair of remarkable chairs sits in a long tradition of safari chairs. From Eileen Gray to Kaare Klint and Elias Svedberg a lot of great designers have made versions of self-assembled furniture, which probably finds it origin in Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military. The design recalls Pierre Chapo’s “S10” chair...

Brazilian Pair of Scissor Armchairs in Brazilian Hardwood
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Pair of scissor armchairs, Brazilian hardwood and fabric, Brazil, circa 1950 These exceptionally rare armchairs from Brazil embraces the quintessential Brazilian ethos of the 1950s. The design bears the beauty of Brazil's natural environment through its raw, constructive layout and the skillful use of a local, solid wooden material. The construction is marked by well-defined geometry, logical proportions, and visible constructivist elements. Characterized by simplicity, clarity and absence of ornamentation, this framework is exemplary of architectural minimalism. Upholstered in a delicate patterned fabric in green and white, it beautifully complements the wooden elements. The material use, woodworking, and the overall composition strongly resemblance the designs by Studio de Arte Palma, co-founded by Lina Bo Bardi, Pietro Maria Bardi, and Giancarlo Palanti...

Antique and Vintage Armchairs for Sale on 1stDibs

Armchairs have run the gamut from prestige to ease and everything in between, and everyone has an antique or vintage armchair that they love.

Long before industrial mass production democratized seating, armchairs conveyed status and power.

In ancient Egypt, the commoners took stools, while in early Greece, ceremonial chairs of carved marble were designated for nobility. But the high-backed early thrones of yore, elevated and ornate, were merely grandiose iterations of today’s armchairs.

Modern-day armchairs, built with functionality and comfort in mind, are now central to tasks throughout your home. Formal dining armchairs support your guests at a table for a cheery feast, a good drafting chair with a deep seat is parked in front of an easel where you create art and, elsewhere, an ergonomic wonder of sorts positions you at the desk for your 9 to 5.

When placed under just the right lamp where you can lounge comfortably, both elbows resting on the padded supports on each side of you, an upholstered armchair — or a rattan armchair for your light-suffused sunroom — can be the sanctuary where you’ll read for hours.

If you’re in the mood for company, your velvet chesterfield armchair is a place to relax and be part of the conversation that swirls around you. Maybe the dialogue is about the beloved Papa Bear chair, a mid-century modern masterpiece from Danish carpenter and furniture maker Hans Wegner, and the wingback’s strong association with the concept of cozying up by the fireplace, which we can trace back to its origins in 1600s-era England, when the seat’s distinctive arm protrusions protected the sitter from the heat of the period’s large fireplaces.

If the fireside armchair chat involves spirited comparisons, your companions will likely probe the merits of antique and vintage armchairs such as Queen Anne armchairs, Victorian armchairs or even Louis XVI armchairs, as well as the pros and cons of restoration versus conservation.

Everyone seems to have a favorite armchair and most people will be all too willing to talk about their beloved design. Whether that’s the unique Favela chair by Brazilian sibling furniture designers Fernando and Humberto Campana, who repurposed everyday objects to provocative effect; or Marcel Breuer’s futuristic tubular metal Wassily lounge chair; the functionality-first LC series from Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret; or the Eames lounge chair of the mid-1950s created by Charles and Ray Eames, there is an iconic armchair for everyone and every purpose. Find yours on 1stDibs right now.
