About the Item
A.R.P. armchair in steel and fabric by Pierre Guariche, Airborne, 1953
Lacquered steel rod frame. Upholstered seat and backrest. All materials are original.
The Atelier de Recherches Plastiques was first and foremost a project that became a collective enterprise, bringing together three designers, Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier, whose obvious intention was to break away from the codes of a classical aesthetic that was too present. However, they felt that this should not obscure the economic imperative that, in this post-war period, the furniture they wished to create should remain affordable to the greatest number. This period proved to be decisive for each of these designers as it was the beginning of industrial furniture production.
At the origin of the A.R.P., Pierre Guariche fully intended to take part in the creation of programmes designed to meet the needs of reconstruction through the production of standardised objects. This clearly defines the objective of the Atelier de Recherches Plastiques: to create mass-produced furniture that will be accessible through industrialisation. This essential criterion led Pierre Guariche to turn to the American design of the time to draw objects of rational conception marked by technical and aesthetic innovation.
Pierre Guariche could then propose to Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier to join such a project, which was initially based on a common interest, the creation of mass-produced furniture, which could only become a reality by joining forces, and to promote them to manufacturers.
