About the Item

The Toro Armchair is a sculpted, modern seat by Jacques Jarrige, hand-carved from recycled wood and finished in a luminous white lacquer. Its powerful, compact form is softened by the artist’s signature curves, creating a functional artwork that embodies Jarrige’s ongoing exploration of movement, line, and negative space. The armrests feature distinctive openings on either side—elliptical cutouts that recall the artist’s sculptural vocabulary and his sensitivity to light and shadow. These voids are not simply decorative; they activate the space around the chair, allowing it to breathe and appear lighter despite its solid construction. True to Jarrige’s language, the Toro balances angles and curves in a single fluid gesture. The back tilts subtly, the legs emerge seamlessly from the carved body, and every surface bears traces of the artist’s hand. At once bold and refined, the chair evokes both primitive design and contemporary abstraction. As with many of Jarrige’s works, the piece is shaped intuitively, without rigid planning—resulting in an object that feels alive, responsive, and deeply human. The smooth lacquer finish heightens the contrast between shadow and form, while emphasizing the sculptural integrity of the chair as a whole. The Toro Armchair is a unique piece that exemplifies Jarrige’s ability to merge utility and art, offering a seat that is as expressive as it is inviting.
