Rustic English Victorian 19th Century Iron Garden Bench with Fan Shaped Back
Located in Atlanta, GA
A rustic English Victorian period iron garden bench from the 19th century with fan-shaped back, wooden seat and rusty patina. This charming English Victorian period iron garden bench from the 19th century captures the essence of rustic elegance with its fan-shaped back and gracefully arched arms. The bench presents a beautifully weathered appearance, where the iron structure showcases a rich rusty patina that speaks to its age and history, while also adding a layer of authenticity and character. The fan-shaped back, composed of delicate wooden splats radiating outward, provides a delightful visual element, reminiscent of the ornate garden designs of the Victorian era.
The seat, crafted from a series of additional wooden slats, offers a warm contrast to the cool iron frame, its simple lines emphasizing the bench's rustic appeal. The wooden slats have aged gracefully, bearing the marks of time and outdoor exposure, further enhancing the piece's vintage charm. The arched arms, with their subtle curves, provide comfort and a sense of continuity to the overall design.
Ideal for an English garden, a charming patio, or a sun-dappled courtyard, this Victorian iron garden bench...

Vintage Wrought-Iron Diana the Huntress Pattern Garden Bench with Upholstery
By Molla
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Molla painted wrought iron upholstered garden bench from the mid-20th century depicting Diana, goddess of the hunt and her arrows. Created in the midcentury, this exquisite iron bench features a nicely weathered painted finish. Revealing its neoclassical influence, the nicely curved back is adorned with arrow motifs in its upper section that give us a hint about the character depicted below in each pierced splat. We are indeed in the presence of Diana, goddess of the moon and of the hunt, also known as Artemis in Greek mythology. Dressed in her typical garment and showcasing the moon crescent on her head, she is ready to draw an arrow from her quiver. One of her canine companions is placed behind her. Both of them are surrounded by delicate foliage reminding us of Diana's taste for the outdoors. Two scrolling open arms flank the rectangular seat, recovered with a new upholstery. The ensemble is raised on eight slightly splaying legs. With its neoclassical theme and weathered patina, this American painted bench...

Regency Brass Inlaid Rosewood Metamorphic Bench
Located in Kittery Point, ME
The rectangular padded seat covered in brown leather, opening to reveal a set of library steps, over a solid inlaid seat-rail and ring-turned tapering legs ending in castors.
18in. high, 34 1/2in. wide and 16 1/2in. deep. Opened, 36in. high and 49in. wide.
Rooms organized during the Regency period as libraries often had floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The upper shelves were difficult to reach, so movable library stairs were invaluable. Further, libraries were one of the most important rooms in a stately house, symbol of its owner's wealth, culture and status. As a consequence, designers, architects and cabinet or chair makers devoted much attention to its architecture and decoration. Hence, the emrgence of innovative ideas such as our bench.
Enter the Regency era metamorphic library chair/bench (chairs are more common than benches)!
The tables, chairs and stools containing library steps were patented in Great Britain by Robert Campbell in 1774 but this innovative chair-based design did not become immediately popular. Once the Regency was established, a neo-classical interpretation of Campbell’s Metamorphic Library Chair concept started to become popular in London. Any early attributions rely heavily on two contemporary sketches...
