About the Item

A rare example of an 18th Century French Louis XIV Provincial Walnut Canapé à l’Oreille, upholstered by Alberto Pinto. A finely proportioned Louis XIV Provincial walnut canapé à l’oreille, France, 18th century. The high, winged back and gently sloped arms reflect the formality and sculptural elegance of the Louis XIV period, while the exuberant textile upholstery and nailhead trim lend a distinctive decorative punch. The richly colored needlepoint-style fabric, depicting stylized medallions and scrolling foliate motifs, was selected and custom-applied under the direction of the legendary interior designer Alberto Pinto. Alberto Pinto (1943–2012), renowned for his opulent interiors that blended classical European refinement with cosmopolitan luxury, sourced this canapé for one of his international private clients. His interiors—whether for royal residences, private jets, or yachts—were defined by an eye for grandeur and heritage craftsmanship. This piece bears a Sotheby’s New York label verso and is a rare example of Pinto’s hand in revitalizing a period form with bold, historically referential fabric and restrained structural restoration. The canapé is raised on a beautifully carved walnut base with undulating cyma-curved legs and stretcher supports, characteristic of the Louis XIV provincial vernacular. Its scale and decorative presence make it ideal for a statement hallway, library, or formal sitting room. The robust walnut frame, sculptural silhouette, and lively stretcher design reflect the craftsmanship of provincial French menuisiers working circa 1760–1780, likely in regions such as Normandy or the Rhône Valley where such forms remained in favor. Provincial pieces of this caliber are prized for their blend of courtly design and regional charm. An exceptional opportunity to own a piece with both historical integrity and prestigious decorator provenance. Dimensions: 43.5" H x 58" W x 28" D Condition: Good/Fair. Evidence of worming and age-related cracking to the walnut frame, typical of 18th-century pieces. Minor losses to nailhead trim; upholstery in very good condition with only light wear. Structurally sound and visually striking. Provenance: Sotheby’s New York; sourced and upholstered under the direction of Alberto Pinto for a private collector.
