About the Item

“It does not try to be too demonstrative, it has a certain form of discretion, it is a real success of contemporary furniture,” said Philippe Starck of his postmodern chair for Café Costes in Paris. Lightweight in anodized aluminium, his design relies on a riveted sheet of metal that rests on a trio of tubular legs. The original chair was produced in steel and plywood, with this metal version a rare later edition. The sheath-like curved back speaks to the sleek industrialism that would dominate the following decade. French architect and industrial designer Philippe Starck (b.1949) is widely credited with ushering in a new era of “democratic design”. His philosophy, shaped by an aeronautical engineer father, produced a protean cavalcade of interiors, furniture and home accessories that embraced functional elegance. Among his biggest hits are the Juicy Salif juicer for Alessi (1990) and the Ghost chair for Kartell (2002).
