Midcentury Vladimir Kagan Sculpted Sling Dining Chairs Model VK 101 and VK 101A

About the Item

A beautiful rare set of four American walnut, Vladimir Kagan sculpted sling dining chairs, in black leather. This spectacular set of American walnut dining chairs consists of two VK 101 side chairs, and two VK 101A arm chairs. Signed with branded Manufacturer's Mark to underside of two side chairs. (Kagan Dreyfuss A Vladimir Kagan Design) These beautiful chairs with their graceful arching frame feature a leather sling back that flows from the top of the back rail to the padded leather seat and framed in American walnut. The slight backward angle of the legs and seat and the graceful sculpted arm accentuate both comfort and the “less is more” signature Kagan flair for design. The warm American walnut framed has mellowed into a rich warm brown enhancing the contrast of the black leather seats and back. Vladimir Kagan’s work was known for his organic shapes and superior craftsmanship and these chairs are infused with his eye for design and his demand for comfort. This rare set of American midcentury sculpted sling chairs will be a welcome addition and enhance any modern classic home or office. Measurements: Side Chair 19” W x 24” D x 36.5” H (seat height 19”) Armchair 24.25” W x 24” D x 36.5” H (seat height 19”) History: Vladimir Kagan was born on 29 August 1927 in Worms, Germany. The son of a Russian Jewish cabinetmaker, Vladimir Kagan's childhood was cut short by the rise of the Nazis. He emigrated to the United States in 1938. Studied architecture at Columbia University. In 1947 he joined his father Illi Kagan, a master cabinetmaker, to work in his woodworking shop and learn furniture making from the ground up. He opened his first personal shop in New York in 1949. In 1950 the Kagan-Dreyfus partnership began with a showroom/store in New York City. His early work included furniture for the Delegate's Cocktail Lounge at the United Nations and furniture for the "Monsanto House of the Future" at Disneyland. In April 2016, Kagan died due to a heart attack.
