About the Item

Stunning set of four "Monk" chairs designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni in 1973. In the design of the Monk chairs, Afra and Tobia Scarpa pay close attention to the expressive qualities of the materials, studying shapes and finishes that best convey them. The seat and backrest are made of original black Molteni leather, in excellent condition, fitted onto two steel tubular elements shaped to ensure great seating comfort. The legs, made of solid national walnut wood, are joined in pairs through interlocking joints and clearly show the fixing of the crosspieces. The overall condition is excellent, with only a few tiny signs of age on the leather that add character and authenticity to the set. Bibl.: Giuliana Gramigna, *Repertoire of Italian Design 1950-2000*, Allemandi, 2011, p. 222 Antonio Piva, *Afra and Tobia Scarpa Architects and Designers*, Mondadori, Milan, 1985, p. 145 Afra and Tobia Scarpa were two Italian designers known for their work in architecture and industrial design. Afra Bianchin Scarpa (1937-2011) and Tobia Scarpa (born in 1935) worked together as a couple both in life and in their professional careers, forming one of the most prolific and influential duos in the landscape of 20th-century Italian design. Both Afra and Tobia Scarpa graduated in architecture at the Iuav University of Venice, where they studied under leading architects such as Carlo Scarpa (Tobia's brother) and Giuseppe Samonà. After completing their studies, they began working together at the studio of Carlo Scarpa, where they had the opportunity to develop their unique and sophisticated style. Their collaboration led to the creation of numerous iconic projects in furniture and interior design, often characterized by timeless elegance and meticulous attention to detail. Their works have been produced by world-renowned brands such as B&B Italia, Cassina, and Flos. Afra and Tobia Scarpa received numerous awards and accolades over the course of their careers, further solidifying their status as pioneers in the field of contemporary design. Their legacy continues to inspire generations of designers and design enthusiasts around the world. Mid-Century Gallery Chairs by Asnago and Pozzi for Giorgetti, 1970's
By Ambrogio Pozzi, Giorgetti S.p.A., Umberto Asnago
Located in Conversano, IT
Stunning and rare set of "Gallery" chairs, designed by Umberto Asnago and Ambrogio Pozzi for Centro Ricerche Giorgetti between 1975 and 1980. This particular version of the Gallery collection is especially rare. The line featured various pieces inspired by Eastern aesthetics and early 20th-century design, and these chairs - reminiscent of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's iconic silhouettes - are currently the only known examples available on the market. They feature a strikingly high backrest, geometric elegance, and a balance of architectural presence and refined comfort. The combination of black lacquered ash wood and velvet upholstery gives the chairs both visual depth and tactile richness. Please note: These items are in a very good vintage condition. Minor signs of age may be present but do not affect its functionality. We kindly ask you to consider these characteristics prior to purchase. Original maker's mark under the seat.
