Art Deco Dining Room Chairs

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Josef Frank Thonet Art Deco Four Windsor Armchairs Beech Brown circ 1925 Austria
Located in Vienna, AT
Art Deco vintage four ( 4 ) dining chairs or armchairs from brown stained beech design attributed to Josef Frank executed by the company Thonet circa 1925 Austria. Each chair is labeled with company´s label underneath the seat. These four ( 4 ) dining chairs or armchairs show beautiful turned details at the armrests and at the connections to the seat. The surface is carefully cleaned and shellac polished by hand, so the amazing warmth and depth from beechwood is visible. Very good condition approx. measures: Width 57 cm Depth 53.5 cm Height 99 cm Seat height 45 cm The style and the creation of Windsor dining chairs was been used by Josef Frank. He preferred to use this type of armchair in his interiors, the reason is the cosiness and comfort these Windsor chairs have been featured. Josef Frank ( 1885 - 1967 ) a popular designer and architect, who created with Oskar Strnad an own concept for interiors and architecture: Wiener Schule der Architektur. 1925 Josef Frank founded with his companion Oskar Wlach the very popular interior company Haus & Garten in Vienna in the 1st district, for which he created many wonderful furnitures and interiors and demonstrated a forward looking live style with his lush textile designs and his functional and well looking furniture designs. Josef Frank is very popular till now due his creations for fairytale textile fabrics and his furniture designs, which he also created after 1933 in Sweden. Since 1938 Josef Frank stayed in Stockholm with his wife and designed fabrics for Svenskt Tenn, among others. 1941 Josef Frank emigrated to New York, where he lived and worked till 1947. Art Deco Set 3 Chrome Tube & Black Faux Leather Chairs Attr to Kem Weber Z Chair
Located in Topeka, KS
Fantastic vintage Art Deco set of 3 chrome tube and original black vinyl or faux leather chairs attributed to Kem Weber Z Chair. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The frames have scratches consistent with age and on two of the chairs the texture on the vinyl is a bit different than the third chair. These chairs also have an extra factory hole in the arm on opposite sides leading us to believe these may have been originally part of a ganged set. They work perfectly as singles, however. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1920-1940’s. Now THIS is a Triple-TREAT!!! We have not one, not two, but THREE fantastic vintage Art Deco chrome and black faux leather chairs...

Set of 6 French Art Deco Dining Chairs attributed to Gaston Poisson
Located in Miami, FL
Classic and elegant set of six uniquely designed, comfortable and sturdy French Art Deco dining chairs attributed to Gaston Poisson but also made in the manner of Rene Prou (1889-1947). Conical barrel-shaped and canted seat backs over corresponding supports. Extremely comfortable wood back and wide seats make these a delightful choice for any setting. Constructed from solid beech and rosewood which makes these chairs strong enough for daily use. Reupholstered with chic simili cuir or faux leather with extra padding making these chairs a wonderful choice. These chairs have been recently restored and refinished, multiple layers of lacquer. They pair very well with our other French Art Deco items including a vitrine/display cabinet and large buffet/credenza both attributed to Jules Leleu. Also, our soon to be available extendable Art Deco dining table...

Jacob Kjaer Rare Set of Ten Dining Chairs in Mahogany and Niger Leather
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Jabob Kjær for Jacob Kjær Møbelhaandværk, dining chairs, niger leather, cuban mahogany, brass rivets, Denmark, 1937. Stunning set of dining chairs by Jacob Kjær manufactured in 1937. The Danish designer Jacob Kjær created this particular model for the Paris World Fair in 1937. The strong, elegant form of the geometrical backrest with spindles, all executed in the finest Cuban mahogany is absolutely striking. Lightness is created through the slim proportions of the frame which is executed in mahogany. Together with the original cognac niger leather with admirable patina this set of dining chairs is visually striking. A nice decorative touch are the brass rivets on the side of each seating. Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. From 1918-20 he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954. These items are in good, used condition and show patina and signs of wear and use common for pieces this age. The mahogany type of this piece does not require an export license. Please note that we have a total of sixteen chairs...
