Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates Sculpted Lounge Chair, circa 1960s, Signed

About

This 1960s sculptural lounge chair is by Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates and is signed with a Craft Associates Inc. label, confirming its authenticity which is a great thing as there were (and still are) many knock offs of Adrian Pearsall's designs. The fabric on this amazing club chair is all-original and for most of its years was wrapped in a plastic wrap - yes just like you probably remember someone in your family having decades ago! We acquired this chair 6 years ago for one of our private offices, removed the plastic wrap and now that we moved from that particular location are finally offering this gorgeous sculpted lounge armchair for sale. The fabric is a mixture of yellows and oranges, looks to be a vintage Knoll fabric, and is in good vintage condition that has many years of life left to it. The sculptural wood looks to be made from walnut and is in very good vintage condition. There is some slight sagging in the seat but this can easily be repaired prior to shipping. If you plan to reupholster please let us know so that we don't repair the straps and if you plan to use the chair without reupholstery also please let us know so we can be sure to repair the sagging before it is shipped to you. The loose straps under the cushion are an easy fix but if you are going to reupholster it anyhow, its better to replace the straps altogether at the same time. Consider using in a Mid-Century Modern or Postmodern home, also consider for a traditional, classical or contemporary home or office. Works great as a single corner armchair or lounge chair to pair with a sofa and coffee table, or with a desk, also works great as a hall chair, entryway chair for putting on your shoes and boots, fireside chair, TV chair for your favorite movie or show, reading chair, a chair to soak in a view, bedside chair or for a large walk-in closet as a dressing chair. Condition: Good original vintage condition with light wear. Some sagging to seat area due to straps needing to be tightened which we can do prior to shipping. Ready to love and use immediately. Measurements: H 27" x W 34.5" x D 33.5" Seat height 15.5" Arm height 21".

About Adrian Pearsall (Designer)

Adrian Pearsall designed some of the most exuberant and expressive American furniture of the 1950s and ’60s. For verve and vivacity of form, he surpasses even Vladimir Kagan — whose work is the emblem of swinging, sexy mid-20th century modernism. Pearsall gave his imagination free rein, and his flamboyant, eye-catching styles are icons of what has become known as “Atomic Age” design.

Pearsall studied architectural engineering at the University of Illinois before opening his Pennsylvania furniture company, Craft Associates, in 1952, and that training shows in many designs. A Pearsall trademark, for example, is a lounge chair with an exceptionally tall, trapezoidal back, which give the pieces a skyscraper-like silhouette. Pearsall also had a talent for so-called “gondola” sofas — long, low-slung pieces with upswept ends. Many of Pearsall’s sofas and chairs are supported not by legs, but on gently arced walnut skids.

Pearsall also had a gift for tables, in particular glass-topped side and coffee tables with frames that have the look of an Alexander Calder stabile. As you will see from the offerings on these pages, Adrian Pearsall had flair, and his work adds an attention-getting, sculptural exclamation point to any décor.
