Brazilian Design Costela Lounge Chairs by Hauner & Eisler for Forma, 1950s

About the Item

The Costela (Rib) chairs and sofas by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler became an instant success after their introduction in the Brazilian market, and it wasn’t for long that production was partly moved to Europe to meet the growing demand there. The lounge chairs here for sale have been produced under license in Italy during the 1960s by Forma Moveis, Brescia IT. Each chair consists of 8 individual upward curving ribs, placed on a lightweight metal frame with brass details. The ribs support two loose cushions which have been reupholstered by a master-reupholsterer using new high-density foam, thus ensuring a good support. The Fabric selected is “Schwarzwald” by Dedar Milano: Note that both chairs have matching patterns, buttons included. Origination: Italy, 1950s. Purchased from 1st Owner in Switzerland. Condition: Excellent vintage. Structurally strong. Wood has been refinished, cushions replaced. This set is ready to use on a day-to-day basis. Some signs of age on the metal frame which we have purposely left untouched. Materials: Upholstery fabric, metal, veneered wood. Literature Reference: Aric Chen, Brazil Modern the rediscovery of twentieth-century Brazilian furniture. The Monacelli Press, New York 2016, page 205. Approximate Dimensions: Width: 70 cm Depth: 85 cm Height: 80 cm Seating Height: 42 cm We have the matching bench available as well, however not re-upholstered.

Grasshopper Chair by Eero Saarinen for Knoll The Grasshopper (or model 61) chair was designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1946, it was actually the first chair designed for the Knoll company, and turned out as an immediate success. Saarinen, an American but Finnish-born architect / industrial designer, was one of the main influencers of the new, modernist style now typical for mid-century American furniture design. His aim has always been to use simple forms, provide a comfortable user experience, while applying new techniques and often in cooperation with others. The use of laminated birch wood, regularly seen in the designs of Charles and Ray Eames is no coincidence, since they have worked together in the early 1940s. Other well-known pieces are the Womb Chair, and the Tulip or Pedestal series. Our lounge chair is a Knoll International original, a licensed early Swiss...
