Kangaroo Chairs PJ-SI-59 by Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh, 1955

About the Item

Kangaroo Chairs; Pierre Jeanneret; PJ-SI-59; Teak; Cane; India; Chandigarh; 1955 These distinctive low chairs, known as "Kangaroo Chairs," are meticulously crafted from solid teak and intricate braided cane work. Pierre Jeanneret's iconic Kangaroo low armchair became an integral part of the furniture in the city of Chandigarh. Jeanneret's designs are celebrated for their simplicity, blending modern European aesthetics with traditional Indian influences. This particular low chair, originally designed for the General Hospital Hall in Chandigarh but also found in many private residences, is characterized by its unique "Z" shape sides, composed of a continuous sequence of three vaguely triangular coplanar elements. The seat and backrest feature the signature weaving technique within the wooden frame. A noteworthy and relevant aspect of these Chandigarh chairs is their eco-friendly origin. Every piece was meticulously crafted from trees that were harvested during the city's construction, reflecting an early commitment to ecological sustainability.

  • Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
    By Pierre Jeanneret
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...
