Iconic and refined pair of poufs with velvet cushions and aluminum frame; the almost square top of the poufs has been restored and upholstered with an expensive, elegant, and sturdy velvet in a delicate but bold green color; the seat is supported by a solid, massive aluminum column and pivoted to it in such a way that it can rotate freely through 360°; from the column branch off four boldly shaped, slightly curved, and extremely sturdy legs at the end of which are placed non-slip rubber feet; these sturdy legs give exceptional stability to the whole. The pair of poufs were handcrafted between 1960 and 1965 in Meda in the province of Monza and Brianza in Lombardy, Italy, a place famous for its design industry and historic handcrafted production of classic and modern furniture. The artisans were inspired by fashion design in those fascinating and creative 1960s, a design that left room for creative freedom and innovation, a design that explodes into a variety of styles and movements that explain its richness, making room for roundness, freedom of form and movement, lightness and simplicity. The artisans were inspired by the desire to devise two small-sized objects with strong, simple lines and gave the pair of poufs a timeless elegance; their design plays between austerity and strictness, and their exaggerated linearity gives the objects a dynamic and stately character. The "Blocco" seat / pouf, designed with such purpose in 1970, has got now a fresh re-edition with the same function but with a more joyful spirit by offering colorful covers. Have a nice seat!
Nanda Vigo said about "Blocco":
"Many elements called “furniture” are needed that actually remain “fixed”, once set, to the well-being. I've always rejected the tendency to overload space; therefore I have always worked to the limit of need."
NANDA VIGO, born in Milan in 1936, lives in East Africa and works in Milan. She showed an interest in art at a very early age, when she had the opportunity to spend time with Filippo de Pisis, a family friend, and to study the architecture of Giuseppe Terragni, in which she immediately noticed the subtle employment of natural light. She studied architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, worked as an intern in San Francisco, then returned to Italy where she opened her own studio in Milan.
The underlying characteristic of the work has always been the relationship between light and space, which she has developed in a series of “environments” that blend architecture and design. In 1959 she began to visit the studio of Lucio Fontana and got to know that artists who founded the Azimut Gallery in Milan: Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani and Vincenzo Agnetti. During that period, she developed relations with the artists of the Zero group in Germany, the Netherlands and France, as a result of which her work was shown in more than 400 solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe.
Between 1964 and 1966 she participated in some thirteen Zero exhibitions, including “Nul 65” at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and “Zero: An Exhibition of European Experimental Art” at the Modern Art Gallery in Washington D.C.. She was the curator of the legendary exhibition “Zero avantgarde” in 1965 in Fontana’s studio in Milan, at which some 28 artists were represented. In 1964 she created Utopie with Lucio Fontana for the Triennale. Again at the Triennale, in 1973 she organized a performance at which architects and artists freely intervened: it's considered to have been the first happening at the event.

An ottoman is a short seat or footstool that is also often used to store items. A pouf is similar, but it’s typically more petite than an ottoman, usually without the storage space inside.

These versatile furnishings have been made available in all manner of shapes and sizes over time, and depending upon their firmness can be used as a side table should an occasion call for an extra one. However, your average ottoman is almost always firmer than a pouf, and even if the plush pouf in your living room feels sturdy, it’s probably not the best surface for your early-evening cocktail.
Both ottomans and poufs can help create an inviting and warm atmosphere in your living space. For the smaller rooms that are characterized by a casual feel, a shaggy or woven wool pouf might be a better choice, as it’s likely to be more compact and floor-cushion-like than an ottoman. The latter are often larger and more table-like and are comparatively a good fit for a more formal room such as a library or a study. Today, you might find that an ottoman works well in your bedroom, where there isn’t room for a sofa, or perhaps it can serve as a reliable perch in front of your vintage vanity table.
