"Caballito Blanco Grande" Ottoman Designed by Nestor Perkal for Oscar Maschera
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Nestor Perkal’s inspiration rides the White Horse. With the bridle loose and reins held tight, he has illustrated and narrated the story of that image, seen as a child in a neighborhood shop window, which he imagines in the countryside but encounters as he strolls through the streets of Buenos Aires and which evoke in him the Argentina of his dreams. With the rigor of true gentleness, without loosing sight of the magic, without forgetting the wooden toy. The mane flows free in the wind, in the same wind that accompanied the indigenous people and the gaucho on their adventures. The Argentinean men, who crossed the landscape in search of food, land and family, made use of the horse on that epic crossing. The saddle was a useful contrivance until it became the norm. The verb to mount declines with the noun Mount. Perkal’s metaphor symbolizes concern, support, friendship and repose. His poetic memory is humanistic. It is that sensitive passion that becomes a real image. To this concept he adds the weave of the fabric, hand crafted in the north of Argentina. The loom reveals its cloth, brandished by guards and flags, identity and tradition. “Come quickly little White Horse, take me to the land where I was born… I have, have, have……….. three sheep in a shed. One gives me milk another gives me wool, the third gives me butter the whole week through” leather version: structure cm. 110 × 90 × H 35. seat cover in leather cm. 100 × 130. leather and fabric version: structure cm. 110 × 90 × H 35. seat cover in leather cm. 94 × 114. fabric cm. 102 × 134. Roche Bobois Early Production Mah Jong Elements, Pair, Signed, 1970s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This beautiful pair of Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements by Hans Hopfer are from the earlier years of the design in the 1970s, before they created the Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier collaborations where they gained a new look. This pair of Mah Jong elements are without a seat back, so they are ideal as a pair of large floor cushions or stacked on top of another as a large ottoman. At home, we have another pair of these that we use for our dogs as a large dog bed which we humans also use. When we want more floor space we can stack them and push them against the wall. When we have guests and need more seating in the living room we pull them over and stack next to a coffee table. But most of the time it is side by side for the dogs to use and when us humans need a quick NAP - we use it as a daybed underneath a skylight or can lay with the dogs for a quick cuddle. This pair of Mah Jong sectional sofa elements was reupholstered with new fabric over the original interior foam, original bottom lining and labels. The visible fabric is brand new and is in mint condition. Everything else was cleaned, but is original. So it’s the best of both worlds - for those who want a clean, new fabric but also an early production year example of a Classic design. Photos of another pair that we have, in its original fabric are in the photos of this listing. This pair of early production Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, transitional, classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, bedside seating...

Antique and Vintage Ottomans and Poufs

Antique and vintage ottomans and poufs add comfort and style to any living room, game room, home office or minimalist lounge space. An ottoman is a short seat or footstool that is also often used to store items. A pouf is similar, but it’s typically more petite than an ottoman, usually without the storage space inside.

When one thinks of the Ottoman Empire, it’s easy to overlook the iconic seat named for the region. The ottoman — originally an upholstered seat or small bench without a back or arms — was a family’s main seating furniture, a way to merge floor seating with cushions and mats. It wasn’t until they were brought to Europe from Turkey, during the 18th century, that it became popular to join ottomans with other pieces of furniture, such as at the base of a chair. Eventually, these footrests were transformed into storage furnishings to organize quilts and blankets or other textiles. Furniture makers crafted their ottomans with lids that revealed a hidden cupboard, which rendered them both comfortable and practical.

Poufs, which appeared in France during the 1840s, are also of the low-platform seating variety. These versatile furnishings have been made available in all manner of shapes and sizes over time, and depending upon their firmness can be used as a side table should an occasion call for an extra one. However, your average ottoman is almost always firmer than a pouf, and even if the plush pouf in your living room feels sturdy, it’s probably not the best surface for your early-evening cocktail.

Both ottomans and poufs can help create an inviting and warm atmosphere in your living space. For the smaller rooms that are characterized by a casual feel, a shaggy or woven wool pouf might be a better choice, as it’s likely to be more compact and floor-cushion-like than an ottoman. The latter are often larger and more table-like and are comparatively a good fit for a more formal room such as a library or a study. Today, you might find that an ottoman works well in your bedroom, where there isn’t room for a sofa, or perhaps it can serve as a reliable perch in front of your vintage vanity table.

Whatever your seating needs are, find a collection of antique, new and vintage ottomans and poufs in varying styles on 1stDibs that include neoclassical, Industrial and mid-century modern. From the bright colors and bold patterns deployed by Milan-born designer Lorenza Bozzoli to the classy leather furnishings created at family-run Brooklyn, New York, atelier Moses Nadel, there is an endless range of these lovable low stools that merge seamlessly with most decor.
