About the Item

Gaetano Pesce Tramonto A New York Sofa For Cassina A 20th century design icon, symbol of the vitality, innovation and creativity of Italian design and one of its masters, Gaetano Pesce, re-edited in a limited series that maintains all of the expressive power and relevance of the original. For the three-seater sofa, the padded skyscrapers are upholstered in an exclusive fabric with a raised texture that juxtaposes light and shadow, creating the effect of light reflecting off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The Tramonto a New York design sofa is reproduced larger than the archive model, in a limited series of 50 pieces, and made with sustainable materials developed by Cassina LAB. STRUCTURE CARB* certified plywood frame for the American market, and elastic webbing. CUSHIONS In variable density natural rubber covered in white recycled PET polyester batting. UPHOLSTERY In fabric. Cassina revisits a 20th century design icon, symbol of the vitality, innovation and creativity of Italian design and one of its masters, Gaetano Pesce. The Tramonto a New York sofa, reproduced in an exclusive limited series of 50 pieces, maintains all of its expressive power and the relevancy of the original 1980 design. A tribute to the designer’s adopted city and, at the same time, an admonition (later reconsidered by Pesce) about its impending decline. And much more. Tramonto a New York is a piece of furniture that aims to redeem the mere functionalism of the design expressing – clearly inspired by Pop Art – an obvious reflection on the contemporary vibe and identity of a metropolis synonymous with dynamism, revolution and energy. Therefore, a personal confession, embodied in a form that goes beyond the customary approach to seating and becomes architecture. Padding filled, individually crafted skyscrapers upholstered in an exclusive fabric whose raised rectangular texture places light and shadow side by side, creating the effect of light that reflects off the windows. In contrast, the setting sun, wrapped in vivid red satin, drops between the buildings that form the backrest. The elements have a plywood frame and elastic webbing and a structure in variable density natural rubber covered in recycled PET polyester batting, encased in fabric. Up-sized to a larger version than the historic original, Tramonto a New York is available in one size only, a three-seat sofa. To guarantee the authenticity of this special edition, each sofa bears a satin finish steel plate with the Cassina logo, the name of the design, the serial number and the name and signature of the artist, Gaetano Pesce. Like all new Cassina products, Tramonto a New York uses circular materials developed through the work of Cassina LAB. He studied architecture at the IUAV in Venice, and attended the Venice Institute of Industrial design. At this experimental school, he met Milena Vettore with whom he opened a studio in Padua, founding in 1959 the “N” Group which focussed on with studies in programmed art. He carries out research in the field of kinetic and serial art. He is in the theatre and the cinema, concerned with lighting, movement and sound as means of expression. Since 1962 he has worked in design, experimenting with new materials and unusual shapes. In 1971 he collaborated with BracciodiFerro (in the Cassina group) for the production of certain experimental objects (like Moloch, 1971, a table lamp blown up to the dimensions of an ironic and emblematic item). In 1972 he took part in the famous exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” at MoMA in New York, with a dwelling module. Experimentation and irony are also exhibited in his projects for Cassina, amongst which the Tramonto a New York sofa (1980) and the Feltri armchair (1987). After a long period in Paris, he moved to New York in 1983. Examples of his work may be found in the most important design museums all over the world.
