About the Item
A rare, one-of-a-kind antique, circa 1860, country Swiss folk decorated wood immigrant's travel trunk.
Handmade in the Meilen region of Zürich, Switzerland, in the mid-19th century, crafted of solid oak and pine, rectangular steamer chest form with hinged lid top, opening to reveal large spacious interior storage compartment fitted with a smaller lidded compartment for valuables. The front facade featuring colorful folky hand-painted polychrome decoration, textured reeded paneling, and geometric wooden molding ornamentation, flanked by iron handles, over scalloped skirt, rising on bracket feet. Signed with owners names, Meinlen, dated 1860.

As warm and attractive as it is functional, having the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses, including as a blanket chest, coffee table, low cabinet, marriage box - wedding hope chest, or farmhouse hall bench, to name just a few.
Overall a superb museum quality example, in great original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged warm rustic patina over the whole.
Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, all wear consistent with over 160 years of age and indicative of use, including trim losses, staining dark marks to top. Strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Presents splendidly.

A scarce antique early American country single drawer lift-top faux grain painted blanket chest - mule chest with beautifully aged warm rich patina, circa 1780
Hand-crafted in the New England region of the Northeastern United States in the second half of the 18th century, comprised of solid wood, most likely pine or poplar, since expensive woods were hard to find throughout the Colonies, especially the rural areas, it features the original rich warm Colonial hand painted faux cherry graining finish and beautifully aged reddish brown patina. Crafted in period English Chippendale taste, having a hinged lid door at the top that flips open to reveal the large sized storage trunk, fitted with a small compartment for storing smaller items. Over a single full-length drawer with quality hand-cut dovetail joinery and affixed with an unusual trio of brass batwing pulls. Raised on ogee bracket feet with carved and molded edge trim.

Hand-crafted in the Provincial Tuscany region of central Italy in the mid-19th century, old solid wood construction, most likely pine, in the original paint finish, Neoclassical taste, having a rectangular top over conforming two door cupboard, opening to spacious interior fitted with one shelf, rising on tapering squared legs with ring-and-spike feet.
The doors and sides feature inset panels with beautiful medieval Florence hand painted whimsical flags capped by grotesque scrolling foliate embellishments.
