About the Item
An exceptional late 18th century Imperial Russian empire bookcase or display cabinet in the finest figured mahogany richly inlaid and mounted with gilded brass and gilt bronze. The bookcase is characteristic of the Russian "Jacob" style which was fashionable in the late 18th and early 19th century in France. The overall design however owes more to the work of David Roentgen than it does to the Jacob dynasty. This work is also reflects the influence of Christian Meyer, a German born cabinet maker who was greatly influenced by Roentgen's work and executed many commissions for the Russian Imperial Court. It is, in fact, possible that this bookcase could be the work of Meyer himself or his workshop but this cannot be ascertained without an expert opinion.
Structurally, the book/display case is made up of three sections which the French call " trois corps"; a central top pediment; a top section with three glazed doors opening to reveal shelves; a middle open section having a flat surface and four small frontal turned columns, (in part supporting the top section); and a lower section having a pull out leather lined writing (serving) slide above three drawers, and three lower doors opening to reveal three shelved interiors.
