Designed in 1900, this model commode was conceived en suite with a dressing table, index number 600, and a double bed, number 601. Although clearly started in 1899, a note in the Blue Daybook shows that the ciseleur enriched the chasing on the bronzes much later, in September 1902, and with a fleur de pêcher marble top costing 110 francs. Whereas two of the matching beds and dressing tables were made, Linke made five versions of this commode between 1899 and 1910, with one example made for the compagnie nationale de Buenos-Aires in 1908.
Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris in 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new – Rococo curves were laden with gilt-bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘art nouveau’. A magnificent rectangular black 2-door cabinet in Napoleon III style. Large and small details are gilt, bringing antique and luxurious looks. Brass medallions are centrally mounted on each door and also adorn the upper facade of the cabinet. The inside of the cabinet is divided into three horizontal shelves. At the bottom of the cabinet, there is a figure of a woman's mask, decorated with floral motifs, notably acanthus leaves and it is completed on the side with a rich ornamentation of gilded bronzes caryatides. The borders running along the cabinet are all gilt and engraved with beautiful patterns. On the two cabinet doors, there are two big figures encased in an oval border, representing Apollo, the god of music, and Hermes, the messenger of the gods.
Both are the son of Zeus, and they are also frequently present in mythological tales about the other. When Hermes was just a toddler, he once left his cradle to steal the cattle of his half-brother Apollo. Apollo soon discovered that his flock was missing and began to search the surrounding area. Of course, Apollo was the god of prophecy, so he soon found out about the thief and furiously went to Mount Cyllene to find Hermes in his cave. He grabbed the infant and took him to Mount Olympus, to be judged by their master Zeus, the king of the gods. In front of Zeus, Hermes initially denied everything, but in the end, he had to confess. Zeus found the story quite amusing, so he did not punish Hermes, but only required him to return the flock. Hermes regretted what he had done and offered Apollo his lyre as a gift. The lyre was a musical instrument that Hermes had created all by himself from the shell of a turtle. To repay Hermes for his kindness, Apollo returned the gesture by giving Hermes a golden staff...

This wooden cabinet is designed in the Boulle style. This style was very popular around the time of Napoleon III. The characteristic of this style is the use of small pieces of wood in furniture, inlaid designs with many different materials: precious wood, precious stones, enamel, ivory, seashells, metal, marble etc. In addition, to express the royal style, the "Boulle" style also uses a large amount of gilded copper on the furniture, such as tiger claw decoration, mirror border decoration, leaf decoration, etc.
The main elementsof this cabinet is ebony and turtle shell, with decorative details and gilded legs. This is a pretty prominent highlight in the overall black and gold color scheme. Moreover, the head of a woman is in the middle of the cabinet with waves in her hair and grape vines could be representing the Greek goddes of spring Spring. Surrounding the head are beautiful acanthus motifs incorporated in every layer and surface of the cabinet. Symmetricallly on the left and right side of the head are two identical faces, with one being the lock of the cabinet where key goes. The four corners of the cabinet have blooming carnations to create a feeling of spring coming. The details are collaged, decorated with golden bronze leaves in a classic French style. The rectangular Louis XIV Régence armoire or wardrobe with rounded corners standing on a short base with bracket feet and curved apron with gilt-bronze Apollo head mount; the two doors can be opened by a Pasquil lock to reveal the inside with four removable shelves. The doors decorated with gilt-bronze framed rectangular cartouches displaying elaborate trellis pattern marquetry and gilt-bronze paterea mounts at the corners; the inner sides of the doors each with a large marqueted rhomb motif; the sides of the armoire with quatre-foil mirrored marquetry. Rich gilt-bronze banding, the upper corners and the bracket feet at the front with Louis XIV style gilt- bronze foliage appliques.
Although this exceptional Louis XIV / Régence armoire or wardrobe does not bear a stamp (stamping furniture only became commonplace after 1745), its shape, its quality of manufacture and its luxurious yet well-balanced use of Louis XIV/Régence gilt-bronze mounts on an elaborate geometrical marquetry all lead to the workshop of the important cabinet maker Etienne Doirat (1675-1732).
Étienne Doirat came from a family of cabinet makers that had been established in Paris from the beginning of the 1600s. Doirat only began to stamp his furniture at the end of his career, and accordingly only few pieces bear his stamp and can serve as comparison pieces for newly discovered pieces of furniture. He constructed various furniture forms, including commodes, armoires, corner cupboards, and tables, often veneered with simple marquetry in exotic woods. Although he did not do the casting, chasing and gilding, Doirat tried to keep exclusive control over the models for his bronze furniture mounts...

This elegant pair of cabinets was made in Venice around the middle of the 18th century, in the Baroque period.
The wooden structure is entirely lacquered in shades of sugar paper blue with reserves and golden frames. The cabinets feature a lacquered wooden top in faux alabaster marble in bloom, of mixed and moved foma and edged by carved and gilded frame. On the front, they are accompanied by a drawer with a grip in gilded wood carved in shell shape. Below a door, which closes a large compartment, opens through a bronze handle with lock. The cabinet is crafted in Napoleon III style, which is also known as Second empire style. The main material of the cabinet is ebony with dark varnish finish. The top of the cabinet iscovered with Carrara marble, which was a popular combination of that time period.
The large frizes atop and the small friezes on the bottom are sculpted with beautiful and delicate pearl-shaped motifs. The pearl motif dominates in this antique French cabinet, as it features also in the framing edge of the front panels of the door. It seems like the pearl motifs become an endless source of inspiration in this French gorgeous cabinet.
On either side of the front corner panels of the cabinet is an image of a man's head gilded with ormolu, built into the modillions, where flowers hang from them.The corners of a cabinet are ornated with square rosettes which are overhung by rococo curves and shells. The acanthus leaf pattern complements the decoration of the 4 front corners of the cabinet. In the central door panel there is a medallion with a painting of two women with a goat standing by a tree surrounded by forest.
