18th Century French Louis XIV Chest of Drawers, JME H. Hansen

About the Item

A mid-18th century French Louis XIV chest of drawers from Paris. Stamped “JME H. Hansen” for Hubert Hansen (master from 1747, died 1756). Slightly trapezoidal, double-curved body with volute feet on the front and protruding profiled cover plate. Three-tier structure with 2 large drawers below and 2 smaller side drawers above. Probably original key plates. The extravagant brass handles on the lower two drawers were probably installed in the 19th century or early 20th century and add value to the piece of furniture, even if it is not the original handles, due to their uniqueness and beautiful workmanship. Dimensions: 89 cm high / 35 inch high, 134.5 cm wide / 53 inch wide, 65 cm deep / 25.6 inch deep Two stamps with “JME H. Hansen” on the back of the chest of drawers (see pictures) indicate that it came from Paris in the mid-18th century. JME stands for "Jurande des Menuisiers Ébénistes", belonging to the artisan community that checked quality in Paris in the second half of the 18th century. As a result, these master carpenters were also officially recognized for the royal court. Hubert Hansen was a master craftsman in Paris from 1747 and died in 1756.
