18th C. Italian Butler's Desk Nicely Raised on Turned Leg Base

About the Item

An Italian butler's desk from the 18th century raised on later base. This antique case piece from Italy has the appearance of being a three drawer chest at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, the upper "drawer" is in fact a fall-front, which opens to reveal a small desk with two pair of small drawers flanking a central, open cubbie. Beneath the drop-down desk, the secondary pair of "drawers" are doors, which each open front the center outward, to reveal nice, deep storage within. The desk cabinet is nicely carved with egg-n-dart and garland trimming about the top edge, down each front side and between the drawer openings. When the top fall-front is lowered, the desk height is approximately 35.5" from the floor. This piece is presented upon a later base, not original to the desk top, but custom made for it at one point in this piece's history. The base has nice dentil carvings, which compliment the decor of the upper cabinet, and four turned legs are supported just above their bun-style feet with a straight beam box stretcher. As shown in our additional photos, the upper case can be removed from the lower section, making for ease of transport and installation. This antique Italian Butler's desk would be a fabulous decorate storage option for a study, bedroom, or dressing room.
