About the Item
A Viennese secrétaire from the early 19th century
Burl birch
A Viennese secrétaire from the early 19th century is a true masterpiece of cabinetmaking. Its body is crafted from softwood and carefully veneered with beautifully grained burl birch. The elegant rectangular piece gracefully rises and rests on gilded and ebonised lion’s feet, achieving a perfect balance of majestic stability and refined craftsmanship. The lower doors, the writing flap, and the upper drawer are delicately framed with fine plumwood moulding, while the side panels are adorned with corresponding patterns that harmoniously blend with the overall design. On either side of the writing flap, carved and gilded female Moorish figures stand gracefully, holding vases with poised dignity, lending the piece a touch of classical elegance. Above the main drawer runs a decorative gilded band, artistically embellished with ochsenaugen (bull’s eye) motifs, and above it lies a centrally positioned small drawer, framed by side pedestals in the form of steps, adding an architectural accent.
Upon opening the flap, one discovers a meticulously crafted interior – seven small drawers made of light maple surround the central compartment, whose floor is adorned with fine parquetry. The side walls are decorated with a delicate ebonised colonnade, between whose columns skilfully angled mirrors are placed, creating a fascinating semicircular effect and artistically enhancing the depth of the interior. This exceptional piece of furniture, of the highest quality, impresses with its original locks, which have been preserved, and the flawless execution of its finest details.
