About the Item

This is an exceptionally simple and elegant vintage Art Deco sideboard dating to the 1940's. The macassar wood is strikingly laid out in a perpendicular parquetry pattern and polished to a high gloss. The central lock plate is nickel, having a pebbled finish on its interior. It is bounded by a short raised edge, which is more polished. The black marble top is not original to the piece but perfectly matched to it. Bold, sharply perpendicular white veining is set in a jet black marble background that accentuates the reddish brown macassar wood of the casework. The harmony between top and face is rare and interesting; the stone is no afterthought. The two doors are wide and square, with excellent fit and finish and smooth closure and locking by key. The nickel-plated hinges are sturdy and discreet. Despite its shiny and sophisticated appearance, this piece is quite practical. In addition to a sideboard with great storage and a tough serving surface, it's ideal as a bar. The design is so simple (and free of Art Deco clichés) that it blends easily in a variety of decor schemes.
