About the Item

This is a classic example of a “Beijing” or Tianjin” sideboard, so-called because of their origin in this region of northeastern China. This compact chest has three drawers with two doors below. The center stile between the doors can be removed to place larger items inside. The everted ends of the top add grace and style to the piece, as do the beautifully carved spandrels which feature an archaistic design that has its origins in jade carving. All joinery is mortise-and-tenon; no nails were used. Most of the original oxblood lacquer has worn off, leaving a rosy stain on much of the face. Oxblood lacquer is made by mixing natural tree sap lacquer with the blood of an animal, usually an ox or cow. It is very protective of the wood and quite slow to wear off. The brass hardware is original and has become richly oxidized with age. The piece is in close to original condition, with no new stain and only a thin protective sealer added. It has been finished with beeswax. These pieces were once found in bedrooms of the wealthy or in public reception areas in grand houses. They are now used in dining areas and even under large wall-mounted televisions.
